I prefer bipods or front rests with bags that fit the gun to plain front bags, but bags can work.

Just buy the standard Caldwell rock not the BR model.Less than $100 I know you said you didn’t want to spend the money but after awhile the 2x6s,boards and pieces of plywood become A PITA. I did it for years adjustable front rest is so much nicer.

I use a Sinclair front rest for my hunting rifle load development.

I use the same for all my rifle shooting. Including prairie dogging, which for me is all done from a portable bench. Too many back surgeries to be shooting prone.
