I have just finished replacing the red plastic insert in my self butchered S&W 586 with a Brass insert, How do I match the serrations on the front sight base in the brass insert.

HOW DID I DO IT
I made a dovetail that was a hammer fit into the dovetail slot I ripped the red plastic out of. The insert was taller than the face of the ramp and I took and hammered on the top to create a pressure fit, even though it was not needed. It looks great and the whole thing needs to be refinished because of the filing and sanding I have done.

So far I have:
1, Ground the full lug to half lug
2, Ground the square butt to copy a J frame square butt, basically the rear corner is rounded.
3, cut filed and sanded the grips to fit me.
4, had a 'smith cut the cylinder for moonclips
5, replaced the red insert with a brass insert and thinned the front sight.
6, rounded the adjustable rear sight to look similar to a fixed sight profile.

Well, I always used a checkering file.

20 years ago that was a pretty common thing, but it was more often a colored insert that was being installed.

Or...if don't have checkering file;
Try , on a practice piece , using a thread chasing file.

Brian; I like the short lug idea. Makes a Model 19 on steroids.
That a future project for me when I find a beater 586...cheap.

Thanks for the info I will try the thread chasing file as I have some. Sam it does indeed handle like a solid 19, Tis becoming a favorite of mine and with the moonclips is very fast.
