them things are a mess.tear it down and take a look at the gas block, and the operating springs.if looks ok clean it real well and lube all the contact points on the bolt. I had a blow by problem on my gas block,a little peening at the leak solved the "short cycling" problem...jwr
Unfortunately, the Universal carbines aren't GI-spec, and finding parts for them is near-impossible. Standard springs MAY work, but there's no guarantee. The only GI-spec manufacturer is Kahr Arms.
Feeding issues are nearly always mag related. Look at the mag lips. Late model Universals are junk, but can use issue mags and not much else. Those poorly stamped op handles tend to break too.
Ejection issues are usually gas or ammo related. Sometimes a bad extractor or ejector. Start with a really good bath, then change ammo and look at the extractor.
Gunparts bought all the remaining parts for late model Universals. A new ejector and spring runs $5.60. $14.50 for the extractor plus $2.60 for its spring. You'll need a bolt tool as well.
Go here for good info on the rifles. There's a 7 meg, .pdf, manual near the bottom. Send Jim the info he asks for too. Good guy. http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_universal.html
