I have been trying to get to the Norma full power load of 1200 fps with a 200 gr bullet. As of now I have been using AA#9 and power pistol for powder and have gotten close, average between 1150 and 1175. Does anyone have another powder option I could try? As of now I am using jacketed but have a mold for a gas check bullet on the way.

I am pushing Hornady's 200 gr XTP to 1250 fps using Hodgdon/IMR Hi-Skor 800-X from a 6.5-inch S&W 610 Revolver. It does not meter well but otherwise is an excellent heavy 10mm Auto powder.

What firearm is the OP using? How will he determine his “maximum” pressure as he searches for top velocity? Flat primers? Sticky extraction? Case head measurement? All have proven to be unreliable, one reason newer manuals using actual pressure measurment have lower max charges.

.

I have 2 5inch 1911s and 1 6inch 1911, the extra 50 fps does not really matter I just want to see if I can get there and maybe I can do it more economically. 13 grains of AA#9 isn't a lot but there might be better out there for the job

SAAMI has never changed the max pressure for an established cartridge. They have added a measurement method in the late 70's (adding piezo transducers to the older copper crusher method) and changed the way some of the statistical methods/calculations are done in the 80's. Max pressure has not changed, there is no safe way to do that up or down. Imagine the liability of such a change.

Where and how are you measuring the velocity? Is the crony at a distance from your muzzle? You may be there if at distsance. Also keep up with the temperature in which your taking the measurements. Most powders increase as the temp goes up but there are a few that increase as the temp goes down (reverse temp sensitive).

Blue Dot is my favorite all-around powder in the 10mm Auto, and is definitely worth a try, although it may not quite get you to the classic 200gn/1200fps load. I think AA#9 and 800-X are your best choices for that. If you decide to try 800-X, be careful with it...it meters terribly, so if you are near its top end for a cartridge, I would hand-weigh each charge.

As far as bullet selection, maybe try a plated bullet. I think X-treme rates their heavy-plate bullets to 1500 fps. My though process is that a copper plated lead bullet will be softer than a FMJ bullet, thus creating a tighter seal and giving you the extra velocity you are looking for. If you decide to try this route, work the load up again from a start charge. I know a plated bullet was not the classic Norma load, but it may be something to try if you want to see the numbers 12xx on your chrono...

I use longshot also but do not try for absolute max loads. I also just shoot 180 gr.

For the OP the thread I posted above seems to cover this.
read post #19

I HAVE A LOT OF THE ORIGINAL NORMA LOADS [ BOTH 170 and 200gr ] and when I pressure checked 'em in the lab the pressure was higher than current proof loads. IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ??!!
When the boys from NORMA/AMOTFORS were here I asked what in the world were they thinking loading the 10MM NORMA [it's correct name ] to such levels ??
" Seemed like a good idea at the time " was sorta where we ended up.
SO......be my guest.
And so it goes...
