I had and loved my Springfield loaded model 1911. Shot great, looked amazing, and came with a number of premium features that I didn't even know about until after I traded it in like an idiot :(

Get a Springfield loaded model.

When I ordered my Ruger 1911 I thought that for the price I'm sure it will be a decent gun. Then I rented one at the range and shot it and now I am fully convinced that for $590 I just stole a stainless 1911 with all the upgrades I need.

First clip through the rental was slow fire at 10 yards with a 1" group. Second clip through the rental was rapid fire at 25 yards and when I brought the target back I ended up with 8 shots in a group the size of my fist. 100 rounds through it will no problems. I shoot pistols at the range about 3 times a year.

I have the Remington R1 Enhanced. Love fiber optic on the front and adjustable on the rear. The finish is very good. And this particular piece has a very good slide and barrel lockup. Very good buy for the money.

I've seen good and bad fit on many different brands at the shops, so inspecting whatever piece you are looking at is the best advice I can give.

I don't care for any additional safety features on my 1911's, so in the price range you posted...

For a range gun, I'd get the SA Range Officer.
Otherwise, I'd go for a Ruger SR1911 or a SA Milspec.

While the SA pistols do come with the ILS(Infernal Locking System), it is easy and inexpensive to remove.

I love my STI Spartan but it doesn't match your price range: it's $600. :)

Seriously, check it out. Do a search for it on this and other forums and you'll see a lot of praise not just for the pistol but also for STI as a company. I did a write up about mine in 9mm on my blog if you're interested (see my signature).

It isn't hard to find a modern made used Colt Series 80 or Series 70 style for well within the $800.00 limit expressed.

I picked up a Springfield Range Officer - it had all the features I wanted and the total was $765 out the door.

Mine looks just like the one pictured. I'll post the shooting results once I get the chance to hit the range.

Sure wish the Springfield RO came with a Novak-style rear sight. Besides the sight, that's the exact configuration I prefer in a 1911.

Kimber

A friend and I were out making the rounds of the Local Gun Shops a couple of weeks ago. Gun Shops are a bit like bars. You never know what you’re going to run into and sometimes things just seem to follow you home.

Kimber makes a great firearm and I’ve been debating for years now about buying one. But the Kimber MSRP and prices in the local gun shops held me at bay.

I also decided that it was going to be a 1911, 45 ACP. So I ran into a good deal on a Super Carry Pro, out of the Kimber Custom Shop. She’s got a 4 in barrel, and is an uptown kind of gal, with all kinds of bells and whistles.

So if you’re looking for a 1911 Style, .45 ACP she’s an excellent consideration. I’m on the wagon for awhile.

I've been very happy with my Colt 1911 Government Series 70 Reissue that I bought a year or two ago for not much more than that price but I don't see any on the market right now in the usual places (Buds and Davidsons).

Les Baer, Colt

A used LesBaer would be nice.

Colts are nice and in that range. I don't think I'll ever buy another 1911 under $1500 ever again, except for a basic GI style Colt.

I've seen Dan Wesson Heritages in the $1000-1200 range. Some custom DW Heritage Razorbacks in duty black around $1500.
Les Baer is the least expensive of those high-level models. I wish I could afford one. New.

Colt seems to be the most reliable in it's price range.

New machinery at Ruger

Ruger is gearing up with new machinery to build for their 1911. I wonder how concerned a consumer needs to be with one made from the new machinery.

I bought my Para when they were moving from Canada to N.C. and got a lemon. They wouldn't pay shipping to them, though I didn't press the issue. It's at my local, arrogant 'smith for refinishing for messing up the finish royally when it was previously there for a strip down, check, clean, and lube.

Regular R1

I have the Remington R1 Enhanced. Love fiber optic on the front and adjustable on the rear. The finish is very good. And this particular piece has a very good slide and barrel lockup. Very good buy for the money.
Is the regular R1 as well made, except for the features of the enhanced?
