Wow!! Thats all that can be said after shooting one of these. A guy I never met let me and my son shoot his Barrett 82A1/M107 at the range today. Nice guy!:D Man, the shock wave one of these puts off is awesome, and after listening to 50 rounds go off, I was wanting more. I put 4 shots down range, and my 10yr old son, shot it once. The recoil was no worse than a 12GA shotgun, but the blast is something I won't soon forget! Heres a few pics of the gun, and me and the boy shooting.

Your son is going to cherish that picture. Great looking gun, I like the short barrel. Have to love the generous gunnies.

How far out where you shooting?

We were only out 150 yrds, the gun was new and only bore sighted, the owner didn't feel the need to back up to the 300yrd mark.

Oh, man...what I'd give shoot one of those lovely things. Just one round or two...or ten. Maybe the owner of the gun woulda let you keep one of the brass cases as a souvenir :D

Okay. Now, you charactors know I'm sitting here waiting patiently for my Bohica...then, you go and put this in my face, and nearly bring tears to my eyes!!!!! :banghead:

That is really cool.

Looks like you guys had a great time. How did it kick?

The 300 Win Mag I shot kicked harder:D It was no worse than my 12GA, believe it or not. The gun weighs a stout 30#, so recoil is not bad.:)

30# and I believe the device on the end of the barrel is more that just a flash suppressor.

We have shooting lanes under cover at the range and you don't want to be in the lane next to a 50cal.

The roof adds to the sound as well :D.

Even if I could afford the rifle, I couldn't afford enough ammo to make it worth while........

Sort of right. The thing on the end is a muzzle brake, not a suppressor.

The amount of recoil for the Barrett 82A1 isn't all that bad and there are several reasons for it.
As noted, the ~30# weight helps.
Next, being shot off a bipod means part of the recoil energy is slowed by the legs in contact with the ground.
However, there are three addition significant reasons.
The muzzle brake alone takes out something like 40-60% of the recoil.
The barrel itself has 2 recoil springs such that the barrel actually retracts about 1" into the receiver during firing and is returned to battery by the springs.
Then there is the recoil spring for the bolt.

The combined result is that the recoil is dampened and drawn out over a longer period of time. Where 12 ga shotguns and .300 winmag rounds tend to have a very sharp slap/punch sort of recoil, the Barret simply has more of a hard shove recoil.

Hang on while I go get a rag to wipe the drool off my desk.

I can only hope those are still legal if/when I have enough money to buy one...no chance in hell on my current college budget.

Haven't shot the new Barrett, but the range I hang out at in McPherson, KS has an Armalite AR-50, single shot bolt gun. You'd think the bolt type would kick more than the semi-auto, but in this case, the Barrett appears to have more recoil.

The only Barrett I've shot was a few years ago, and one of their early models - shot it during a bowling pin match where a guy had it along with him - they allowed him to shoot it at steel silhouette targets at 1000 yards. It recoiled around the 12 gauge magnum shoulder banger.

When I had the first chance to shoot the AR-50, the guys were giving me some crap and telling me to really "suck it up" and that it kicked like a 10 gauge. First shot was anti-climactic, and no more whack on the shoulder than a 20 gauge shotgun if that much. Armalite's muzzle brake is REALLY effective. You sure don't want to be standing off to the side of it though - rearward blast is at about a 30 degree angle off each side and powerful enough to knock a full soft drink can off the bench more than 3 feet back of it if in line with the brake's vent angle.

FUN gun to shoot, and certainly would make a heck of a varmint gun for those 1000 yard prairie dog shots, if it weren't 5 bucks a shot or more to shoot

I've found it well worth donating the ammo at the range to see the look on people's faces immediately after they shoot my State Arms .50 BMG.

The "Fifty Grin" is an actual medical condition.

:D

It's not the recoil, Its the slap in the face from the concussion that gets you.

I love my .50

Oh yeah, and I wish I had pix of our state legislator's daughter after she shot that AR-50. There was a one pound Tannerite charge attached behind the bullseye of the target and it went off with a significant explosion when she hit it.

The legislator was one of those who was instrumental in getting concealed carry passed in Kansas and this occurred at a CCW get together we had a couple of months ago.

Great fun. Now all I gotta do is live long enough to save up the money to get me one!

The kids always love shooting the .50, this is one of my favorite pictures of my son.
