Me and a friend took a non-shooter work buddy shooting with us today. He had handled shotguns before (in high school gym class in NC, of all places), but never handguns.

Between me and my friend we had a 6" stainless Python, a Kimber 1911 (w/22 conversion), a Beretta 92FS (w/22 conversion), a USP 45 and an HK 94 space-gun. So we were able to give the new guy the full treatment :)

We started him out with the Python shooting 38's. I've started new shooters out using the 1911 with the 22 conversion before, but I find that beginners are a bit intimidated by the "contraptionism" of an auto - so I decided to take the simple, non-punishing route of the 38 in a huge revolver. It didn't take but a dozen rounds or so and he was totally controlling his muzzle flip and trigger. We had him shooting 5, 7 and even 10 yards with no problems. I like to think it was my fantabulous instruction :)

By the end of the day he was blazing away with full .357 loads, hitting paper at 25 yards, doing semi-rapid fire with the 22 conversions, plinging with the space gun. I even got him to say the single action trigger of the 1911 was superior, much to the chagrin of my USP wielding friend. Whee!

One thing I've always noticed about new pistol shooters - they have the -darndest- time reloading a 45 magazine. I'm not even sure how to explain how to do it because it never seems to work out right. You hover over them going "no..wait...use the...push down on the roun...not the bullet, the...give it a solid...yeah..no, wait...". What's the proper way to explain it?

Anyway, just a fun day trying to indoctrinate a new guy. I almost have more fun letting new people shoot my guns then shooting them myself (I always go with a "first time, ammo is free!" policy). Thought ya'll could use a little cheer.
