My brother has never been much of a gun person at all. He loves first person shooters on the PC, but has never been into guns or gone shooting with me even though I ask him every time I go.

My dad pulled off to the side of the desert one time and let us shoot his duty revolver, model 14 S&W 38 Special. My brother cried and I got hooked. He was eight and I think I was 5 or 6

My brother and a bunch of his friends get together every other tuesday to play poker and I usually join them. Couple of times they have come to my house and I have shown a couple of them my guns who asked about my giant safe. A few of them asked about a shooting trip and I said sure.

So last sunday my brother calls me and ASKS ME to take him and his friend shooting. I was more than happy too.

So we head down to angeles shooting range with the following armament. A pretty varied range of stuff. By the way the angeles shooting range is a GREAT place to shoot, with friendly staff, well kept and an all around good range.

Pistols

Browning challenger III .22lr semi auto
S&W 6 inch .38 special (my grandfathers duty gun when he was a reserve sheriff)
HK usp .45 full size
Smith and wesson model 29-2 44 mag 8 3/8 barrel
glock 17 9mm
Springfield armory mil spec .45 (had a few jamming problems so I shot it mostly)

Rifles

ruger 10/22
marlin model 94 44 mag (gotta sight this thing in one day, it was all over the map)
M1 garand with national match sights, glass bedded and match trigger
remington model 721 in 270 Win.

shotgun

mossberg 500a

My brothers buddy Joe has shot before so he was good to go. I explain to my brother the four rules, the rules of the range and a few tips on grip, sights and trigger control. We started off with the Challenger at 7 yards on paper.

I must say he shot well, showed good gun safety and a pretty good shot to boot. So we gradually moved upwards in gun all the way to the .44 mag with light loads, he wanted nothing to do with the heavy loads after watching me and his friend.

Then we went over to steel dingers and they had an absolute blast. My brother became quite fond of the .44 magnum and we couldn't get it away from him:) He shot the shotgun 2 times with some light target loads, looked back at me winced and said "No thanks".

Then we head over to the rifle range and shoot the ruger 10/22 on paper at 50 yards.

Once again he shoots pretty well. Maybe it's the video games. We move up to the marlin .44 mag with some light loads and start blasting with them. It may be my ammo, they were my first rounds I ever loaded, but that thing was all over the place even at 50 yards, so we put that away.

Then comes the M1 garand. He absoutely loved this rifle, BAD ASS was the term I believe he used. I sighted it in for 200 yards on a steel dinger and his first time shooting he puts 4 out of 8 on the dinger one of them DEAD center.
He is having a blast. then we run out of ammo

Then we pulled out the .270 win. and popped a few off at the 400 yard dinger. He didn't like that rifle as much os the m1 but he still got a big smile when He hit 2 out of 4 at 400.

The we ran it out to the 600 yard big piggy on the hill and blasted away on that.
I Must say I had my best run of the pig with my own crafted ammo 4 for 4 baby!

Then we had a little mishap. On the last shot the rifle slipped a little from my brothers shoulder and the scope hit him in the brow hard enough fro him to bleed a good bit and have 1/8 circle indent above his eye. He turned out to be okay but he was done shooting for the day.

But even as his head was still bleeding and we were leaving he said "We gotta do this again." Music to my ears.

All in all it was a Great day. It was sunny and gorgeous, a little chilly though. A nice gentlemen let me shoot his m1A squad scout or just squad I think it was. I really wish he hadn't done, now I really gotta get one. Great gun.

So a new shooter has hopefully joined the ranks. Here are couple pics of him shooting the .44 mag. You can see the smile on his face in one of them.

I had the same thing happen to me on a deer hunting trip once. It was COLD so I was wearing lots of extra clothes. Walked around this corner on a trail and saw my deer. Rifle to shoulder and pulled the trigger. Wasn't used to shooting with extra clothes so had the stock wrong and smacked my eye with my scope, and of course missed the shot. Cycled the bolt at the same time was repositioning the stock. Hit my follow up shot complete with eye pain. Had a nice black eye later on but put food in the freezer.

So let your brother know that even experienced rifle shooters sometimes get themselves with that scope ring.

That sounds to me like a GREAT day at the range. For me, introducing new shooters to the sport is every bit as much fun as shooting is for myself. :D

I did, I told him other people have done it and posted about it before. We call it "Scope Face" He laughed at that.

Just wait until he goes to load that Garand and gets an old-fashioned case of Garand thumb. Then you'll get to see him cry like a baby!

Brought a new shooter over to the Dark Side

Brought a friend along a coupla weeks ago. He's an engineer from India and had never even SEEN a real gun. He told me that most cops in India, except the senior guys, even carry! Brought a .22Mag revolver and a .357 snubbie (M60-14, firing light .38 specials). The snubbie scared him a little, but he enjoyed the .22Mag wheelgun. I don't know whether or not he is now One Of Us, but he seemed to enjoy himself. I'll take him again after awhile and see what he says...

"I've gone into hundreds of fortune-telling parlors, and have been told thousands of things, but nobody has ever told me I was a policewoman getting ready to arrest them." -- NYC Detective

"She’ll make a great ex-wife some day."

"A Liberal: One who has nothing, and is eager to share it with others."

"The outcome of this war has already been decided by the quartermaster."

My son's first trip to an outdoor range (fairly slim choices here in Southern California) was this last weekend. He loved it. I wish more folks would take non or new shooters out more often. It's such a great experience.
