Funny story:

Hi all, quick story to you guys:

A friend of mine (girlfriend of another friend of mine) did something stupid and mixed drugs with alcohol, and passed out in an alley near my school. I went over to help her, while EVERYONE else bolted, but whatever.

A campus police officer (A MA Statie by law) came over and helped out until the EMT's got to the scene, when it was obvious she was ok, Lucid, awake, etc, and the EMT's cleared her to leave, the officer started to look us over with his eyes.

*side note, I keep a S&W aluminum colored knife clipped to my pocket, only the clip is ever visible, and most of the time my Tshirt is covering it!

He suddenly grabbed for my belt, and I said, "Woah, usually I have to pay extra for that!" He mumbled something about "is that a knife", and grabbed the knife outa my pocket. Luckily he didnt open it and realize that it is 4+ inches, instead of the 3" or so that is allowed by law to be concealed.

He told me I couldn't keep it on campus, with a wink and a nudge kinda thing, etc. I told him that would be great *wink wink*.

SO, the EMT then asks, "Why do you carry a 'Shank' like that?" Now, I am a well renouned smarty pants, and replied, "Because they won't let me carry a handgun on campus"

AT this point, both officers on scene took 3 steps back and put their hand on their guns, and both EMT's HID behind my friend who just recently stood up!



I quickly left with my friend, and laughed it off. Thought it was funny, and you guys would be interested.

This should be a reminder to anyone who forgot that you don't talk about guns when pulled over on a routine or other traffic stop, unless the law specifically requires it in your circumstances.

Don't even say you are NOT carrying, like above.

The las time I got pulled over,my wife ,daughter and Grandmother were in the car..as the officer approached,I said"when he gets to the car I'm gonna grab his gun and take off."We all laughed,except Gram,who said"oh my God!"
It was then I realized,not everyone has a since of humor......luckily she didn't say anything to the cop!

Luckily, the campus police at my school (Wentworth), even though its in Boston, are really cool about this kind of stuff. One kid I know had an airsoft weapon, paintball guns, etc, in his dorm, and the officer took it, and said he could have it back outside of the dorm as long as he doesn't bring it back in.

If it were up to me, I would be allowed to keep my M1 on campus, but I doubt that would go over well

In Finland:
I live in campus area. Ammo is limited to 20 000/apartment, no limits on firearms. Currently i have AK103 in closet, silenced CZ kadet under my desk, Glock G19 in a box under my bed. Few days ago we had several weapons (including my AK, AR15s, pistols) on display in the main lobby of our school...

If an EMT asks about a knife, the answer most likely to make him drop the subject and leave you alone is, "To cut seat belts if I need to."

Guaran-dang-tee you he had a knife just as big on his hip, for exactly that.

Heh, its the whole hindsight is 20/20 thing. I KNOW I should have said something like, to open crap, or something equally as innocent, BUT, I was enough drunk that I thought slowly, and the first thing that came to mind was that.

most EMT's use a small curved device that will attach to your keyring to cut seatbelts..it's alot more convienient then a large knife which some of your more mentally unstable patients can potentially wrestle from you and stab you with it

Since I work in the field as an EMT, I've got experience with this heh...the goofballs I work for wont' allow anything besides the keyring device on the truck claiming it's for our own safety

I suggest you say that you carry a knife for general utility rather than self-defense.

How do you know what he was carrying or what its purpose was? Then again, most S&W knives I've seen are relatively scary-looking.

Technically, its just a general purpose knife, and ends up always being used to open plastic, or to cut a hole in beer cans (for shotgunning!).

Its just a standard, aluminum handled knife. its this one : (http://www.knivesplus.com/sw-urban-camo-sw-3400c.html) with no camo (all aluminum colored), and a different blade style (It goes straight away from the handle, takes a sharp corner, and ends up at the point, so no serrated, etc).

How 'bout "Because I can." It won't make them drop the subject but it will serve the higher purpose of reminding them that you don't need their permission.

How do you know what he was carrying or what its purpose was?

Because he told a police officer that he was carrying the knife instead of a handgun (i.e., for self-defense), and that was after the officer had already taken custody of the knife. According to Keaner, if the officer had bothered to open the knife, he might have realized that its blade was “too long,” which also made it an “illegal” weapon.

Yeah, but the cop gave the knife back ANYWAY (before my comment). The cop was cool about it, and I think understood my position.

In general the punishment would have been worth the safe feeling having SOME kind of weapon on me. I am a really small kid, and gangstas in Roxbury don't seem to like the "rich white kids" going to school near them. If it was up to me, I would gladly give up drinking in order to carry a nice 1911.

PLUS, I have seen the local police shoot at the range at my school, and they rarely miss the ceiling.

Sorry, Gordon, I misread your post. You are correct.

Now, the last time a cop asked me something like that, I told them it wasn't their business. Spent an hour in jail, and got a bench probation. Got the knife back later.
