GA--walking with a carbine legal?

Have her get a basic varmint hunting permit. $25 or something thereabouts, most likely. Then open-strap her with the Ruger 22/45 that she shoots well.

If Johnny Law comes along, she's just walking around, and if a choice looking bunny comes along, she's ready to pop it. At least that's the story, and she's sticking to it.

If the big bad BG comes along, she has a gun she can shoot well. And she's likely to have this one with her, because it isn't "just designed to kill people". It's a target gun and a varmint gun. It just happens to be available to defend her.

And a BG isn't going after an armed target, anyways. Problem solved.

As a teenager we always went "coon huntin". Of course we never fired a shot at the silly little boogers.:D

sorry for stirring up the jogging debate

I should have read your post after I had coffee.

I agree with the .357 marlin lever action suggestion, it's a sweet gun powerfull enough to stop any bad guy with little to no recoil...I have one and it's my favorite gun to shoot right now and I have six guns to choose from.

get her legal and get a used marlin .357 lever!

Rural country roads are no longer a safe running trail, i would suggest a
good quality treadmill.

I'd like to hear a straight answer to the original question.

It's up to her (with his help) to ultimately decide what weapon to carry. "Stay home on a treadmill" doesn't cut it; c'mon guys, what happened to the 2nd Amendment? You know, that sentence worded by a guy who said taking frequent walks with one's rifle is a good thing? I too would like to know if going for a stroll with a carbine is legal in GA (should I decide it's warranted, the question should be answered already).

I see guys walking through town from parking on the street to the civic center (up to a block away) to attend the gun show. Everytime there's a gun show, there's men with rifles and shotgins walkign around the sidewalks.

Usually there's cops all over the place too.

I've never seen anyone getting arrested.

<shrug>

MY FAVORITE non firearm weapon- the infantrymans friend- the E-tool. Works great!

We're not talking large-scale announced-in-advance cops-are-alerted socioeconomic events, we're talking someone wandering down a country road alone with a gun plainly in view. Since it's not "normal", what will likely happen?

Like Optical Serenity said - ya gotta have the permit to open carry or a hunting license to carry a rifle (and the rifle better match the current open season rules)

.......and regarding the knife - unless the law has changed recently, there is a little paragraph in the Georgia code that says any knife with a blade length over 2 inches can be (or is) considered an offensive weapon and requires a permit to carry.

Common sense dictates the TV and treadmill - sorry.

Also - as noted on packing.org site on GA firearms laws. There may be an allowance for openly carrying a rifle or shotgun based upon the fact that the law says that open carry of a "handgun" requires a permit. I personally wouldn't bet on that keeping your girlfriend off the hook with the local LEOs, as it would probably require an attorney in court to point out the fine legal print - just not really worth the risk.

I think it sort of depends on where you are. In Atlanta, it's probably not a good idea. I grew up in a SMALL town in GA, and I've seen people downtown with shotguns on their shoulders. Of course, hunting is pretty big where I live, so no one bats an eye. If you were in rural, rural GA with a gun on your shoulder, I don't think a Sherriff would even slow down.

But on the permit - it took me 2 hours total to get mine...background check and all. There's no reason not to have one unless you're ineligible, of course.

Read the GA laws. Start at 16-11-120 and the following sections. I cannot find any law that prohibits carrying a long gun on your person ragardless of GA Firearms Permit or not. All the carry laws refer to handguns and then refer to 16-11-29 (the GA Firearms Permit section). You can walk into Wal-Mart or a bank with a long gun on you, but I don't recommend it.

i think you need to work on this 'a hangun is evil and only for a killer, but a rifle is a-ok' attitude of hers. I mean, a gun's a gun. You can't be 50% anti and 50% pro, that just doesn't work!

My wife had the same attitude, and it makes sense, to them.

In her eyes, a rifle or a shotgun was more utilitarian than a handgun. My wife felt that a rifle or shottie, even an evil black one, could be used to hunt for food, to provide for the family in times of need. A handgun, in her eyes, had no other purpose than to end human life. It didn't matter that it was in defense, just that it's predominant use was against humans.

It makes perfect sense to someone of that mindset. It wasn't until a dear friend of ours nearly lost his life (and would have, had he not been carrying) that she began to re-examine her views.

Hey, Dadx4: How about posting the actual part of the GA code that provides that a permit is required for carrying ANY knife. GA issues a "firearms" permit; not a "knife" permit. You don't suppose that a knife with a blade longer than 2" is considered a firearm, do you? :)

I'd suggest talking with a GA lawyer. While it's illegal to fire a firearm on a public right-of-way, it's probably not illegal to walk down a GA road carrying a loaded rifle. (But that's where a real lawyer's advice comes in) It wouldn't, however, be illegal to fire that rifle in self-defense, any more than it'd be illegal to use a handgun for self-defense inside the city limits where firing is otherwise illegal.
