I am thinking of buying one for my Sig 228R.

Is it a good choice in leather OWB concealment holsters?

They have a fairly good reputation. I think it depends on how much you're paying for it. At the $95ish list price, I'd pick something else. In the $70ish price range it's probably a good choice. One point to consider is the the Combat Master is cut for 1.75" belt. If you wear a 1.75" belt that would be great. However, the typical belt/holster loop standard is 1.5". If you have a 1.5" belt, you'll have some "slop" on the belt.

If you like Galco, you may want to consider the Concealable. It is also a pancake design, but has 1.5" loops.

Some other similar options...

Mitch Rosen's 5JR Express Line at $75 https://mitchrosen.com/products/express-line/
- also available from Dillon https://www.dillonprecision.com/5jr-dl_8_22_23715.html

Ritchie Gun Leather has their Belt Speed Scabbard on sale for $80 right now http://www.ritchieholsters.com/catalog
- also on sale at Top Gun Supply for $80 https://www.topgunsupply.com/holsters/ritchie-gun-leather/belt-speed-scabbard.html

Edit to add: I'm sorry, I'm not used to looking for SIG P228R holsters. I don't know if the retailers (Top Gun Supply & Dillon) carry holsters for that gun, though I'm sure both of the leather makers will. Rosen is in New Hampshire, just like SIG, for what that's worth.

I use the Galco holster for my 1911's.

No problem with the Combat Master. It's more of a straight cant as compared to the Concealable, which has more of a forward "FBI" cant. For an off-the-shelf pancake, the Galcos are about as good as they come. I prefer Galco to the DeSantis and Ritchie offerings, but I'll concede that the Mitch Rosen Express Line (from Dillon) is just a cut above.

But ... if you can fork over another $50 bucks, I'd go with any Kramer holster in horsehide. Far more durable, the mouth is rigid and stays open.

I use the "combat master" for my Ruger LCR38. It is a quality holster and has a forward cant. I have no complaints. Wish they made one for my Ruger LC9 with the Crimson Trace laser guard.

For clarity, are you saying Galco and Rosen's Express line's are a "cut above" Ritchie's holsters, and by implication DeSantis and Ritchie are at the same level? I have no dog in the fight, but I've not seen those products ranked as such before.

I have a Galco Combat Master for my G19. While I prefer IWB, the GCM has worked just fine for those occasions where I carry OWB. I think I paid ~$75 about 4 years ago, and it was money well spent.

Not ranking them at all. Just my experience as an inveterate collector of holsters for use with new guns while waiting for custom leather. I ordered a couple Ritchie "Speed Scabbards" from Top Gun Supply, so my sample size is exactly two. The stitching is not nearly as well done as on the comparable Galco holsters I own (I've got five or six), plus, and I don't know what I was thinking, ordered holsters claiming to fit both non-railed and railed version of the pistols -- they fit neither well -- two tight on the railed and not quite the fit I wanted on the non-railed (these were for SIG P-series). As far as DeSantis, for some reason, my employer had way back when issued some for non-uniformed carry, and the edges were unfinished and the thinner leather bodies that seemed firm at first quickly became flimsy and provided a loose fit. By way of contrast, ordered a Rosen Express OWB for a 1911 from Dillon some years back and it's held up pretty well.

Thank you for your comments.
I will order a Galco once the Christmas rush is over in the New Year
