Can anyone tell me about personal experiences with one of these? What brands are good (Century, Vulcan armament, Elite Firearms [any others?], and IWI of course )? How accurate are they?
I picked up a Century, two years ago and it has been 100% I benched it when I first got it to set the sights and it shot nice groups 1.5" - 2' AT 100 Yds. Now that it is good and broke in I should shoot for groups again.
Like nalioth said, lots of hit or miss stories you can read about if you search. I'm glad mine turned out to be a good one, I always wanted a Galil but never bad enough to pay the prices for an original Israeli one.
There's one in .308 for sale on the FAL Files right now for $3,750 face-to-face or $3,900 shipped. That will give you some idea of what you're looking at. They aren't cheap.
Real ones are quite nice as AKs go. They have their own quirks and pluses/minuses, but I'd feel adequately armed with one (though they do have the slappiest triggers of any fully automatic weapon I ever trained with).
Can't tell you much about the US made ones.
ok, well how do I get a semi-automatic .223 israeli gun? And how much will that cost me?
Have about $3000 in your bank account ready to go, and keep an eye on gun auction websites and at gun shows.
For what an actual IMI stamped, Israeli imported Galil will run you, you can get a top end AR-15 (or if you don't like direct gas, a piston AR, a Robinson XCR, etc) and some nice accessories for it. They're good weapons, but here in the US you're better off trying your luck with a Century if you want a Galil clone, unless you're strictly looking for a collectible.
