(Forgive me if this appears twice. I posted once and it seems to have disappeared.)

After cleaning the barrel of my Mossberg 500A, there seems to be about a 1/16 inch gap left between the barrel-retaining screw and the end of the magazine. I've tried repeatedly removing and replacing the barrel, with the same results.

I just don't remember that gap being there; nor do I recall the screw sort of "ratcheting" the last few turns into the magazine when I first disassembled the gun and cleaned it before firing.

Is something wrong, or was I just not paying that much attention the first time around?

Thanks, all

I had a similar problem when I reassembled my 590DA for the first time. The problem was that the magazine spring retainer (sort a of a metal cup that fits into the end of the magazine tube) was not pushed in far enough in the magazine. I do not know if the 500A has a spring retainer or not.

There is a metal retaining ring, but it looks as if it is permanently fixed in there. I didn't want to hammer on it, but pushing on it with my thumb as hard as I could did nothing. I'm going to assume it's all right.

If the end of your magazine tube looks like the below photo then just tap the magazine spring retainer in till it is flush with the end of the tube. You need to use the end of a screwdriver handle or a little mallet to tap it in. Unload before you do anything or it will go off.

Mossberg does have one other type magazine tube end and you might have that one. I am not familar with it. You might go to the Mossberg web page and find a phone number to call for help.

It is a kind of odd two-step process. You add the photo as an attachment. Then you post your message to the board. Then go back to your post, right click on the photo attachment, go to properties, highlight and copy the link that has been assigned to your photo, go back to your message and at the bottom right, click on the edit button, then click the IMG button and paste the link for your attached photo.
