Merry Christmas, THR!

I'm sure this question's been answered before, but the Search feature's giving me trouble, so I'll start a thread. Two parts: Superfluous Backstory and Question:

Superfluous Backstory:

I have a Mossberg 500A that was identified as a "Persuader" when I bought it (I was on the fence about the purchase, but its rhetoric was irresistable! ). It closely resembled the shotguns I'd been trained on in the Police Academy, and I thought I'd be comfortable with it. I was, but it's tough to hit anything fun (clays, for instance) with a 20" cylinder bore barrel.

I made a comment about it to my father, and he surprised me this Christmas with a very fancy Mossberg 500 barrel, complete with screw-in chokes and a respectable length. Here's the catch: The "Persuader" apparently features a longer magazine tube than the conventional 500, and the barrel doesn't fit.

Question(s):

What sort of barrel goes on this shotgun? Should I get one fitted for a 590? What's the difference between the 500 and the 590 anyway, since this 500 I've got seems to have the visual appearance of the 590?

Unless you are willing to buy the "6 shot" version of the 500, your dad just bought you an expensive paper weight.

The "8 shot" (make sure you take out the magazine plug....) 500 basically only has home defense barrels. You can't order any hunting barrels for this gun. I looked into it as I was in the same boat a while back. Honestly, though....who uses more than 2 or 3 rounds at a time in the field or at shotgun sports anyway? Doesn't make sense for Mossberg to make a line of hunting barrels for a home defense gun anyway. Drop the $230 and get a 5 shot to go along with the 8 shot.

Okay, looks like I'll have to get a 5-shot receiver sans barrel that I can attach this thing to. Thanks for the reply. Any advice on finding the receiver? I see one on Gun Broker, but I kind of hate online auctions. I'll ask around at local gun dealers.

You don't need another receiver, just purchase another magazine tube. Look on ebay, Brownells, or Mossberg.

I would consider the Mossberg 500 receiver and magazine tube as
a "semi-permanent" or factory assembly. I do not recommend trying
to install a different magazine tube at home. This is an excuse to
acquire a standard hunting grade 500 as a companion to the
Persuader home defense model. :)

i have a extra tube laying around complete with spring. youd need to use your own follower but they are all the same. what would you want for your persuader tube and barrel if i traded a good condition shorter tube and spring?

you switch em out by just unscrewing the tube. its easy and quick.

The cost of doing this is more than going to BIG 5 and buying the 500 on sale now for $239.99. It has both the 28" & the 18 1\2" barrels at this price, a good deal if you are near a Big 5.

Go over to the Maverick site and look for replacement barrels. They have a 28 inch clay barrel for the eight shot persuader. IT is all the way at the bottom of the page. 135 $.

A five shot tube is $ 34 or so from Numrich (www.egunparts.com). The mag tube comes off very easy. Mine came off with hand pressure only. If that won't work, heavily padded plier jaws and just enough pressure to turn it, will.

So basically you have this:
Mossy 5 shot tube on most of their sporting shotguns
Mossy 7 shot tube on their Persuaders and HD guns
Mossy (rem style) tube on the 590/835s

Any of these can be configured on the standard 500 receiver. All it takes is swapping the barrel and tube.

Please Listen to the Others...

What they are telling you is correct. All you have to do is switch mag tube and attach your new barrel. BAM and you're done.
Buy a new mag tube and if you don't feel mechanical enough then take it to a smith. They can't possibly charge much to unscrew the mag tube. There is a video floating around the web on taking apart your 500, by Life, Liberty, etc.
Believe me this is an easy change over to accomplish.

It goes something like this:
1. Take off barrel
2. Drop trigger Assembly
3. Pull out fore end and rails.
4. Unscrew mag tube, carefully hold mag follower and spring.
5. Change mag tube and reverse process.
Done.
You would have to do the same procedure to clean your receiver accept you wouldn't have to unscrew the mag tube. So if you can clean your gun then you can change the mag tube. :)

The five round and 7 round tubes probably take different mag springs as well. The 7 shot spring might be ok, but springs are pretty cheap so why risk it? While you're ordering the new tube, order a new spring too.

Good point. I made the assumption (yes, I know) that someone changing out the tube would go ahead and pick up the spring and a new follower. But again, it never hurts to point it out.

All good advice. Thanks, guys. I'll swing by Gander Mountain tomorrow, and check to see if they have the parts I need. Failing that, I guess I'll check out the websites you mentioned.

Edit: Situation resolved. I now have two shotguns, one for birds and one for zombies. Thanks again for the help.

Good, now you can leave the Persuader setup for HD, and have a another gun with the controls in the same places and the same MOA for clay games and hunting.

BA/UU/R with both of them. :D
