I did some searches here and through google and didn't find much other than "bridging the gap" with optics.

My question is whether one should or should not have a gap between the free float tube and the upper receiver? Or does it matter at all?

I bought a PSA upper with an SQR free float tube. I took it off to check all the parts underneath the hood. When I reinstalled the tube, I couldn't remember whether there was a gap or not. I currently have it tightened down with about a 1mm gap.

sometimes there is a slight gap, sometimes not. Depends on the rail, barrel nut, and receiver specs. As long as everything lines up you are good to go.

some rails specifically say in the instructions to leave a gap. couldn't speak for all of them.

PSA didn't send any directions. I think BCM might make the SQR rails for PSA but I'm not 100% sure.
