+1 on 4895 or something with a similar burn rate. The Garand is a gas-operated rifle, and so the volume and intensity of the gas tapped off from the barrel to operate the mechanism is important. Color too far outside the lines and you can bend an op rod, or worse. You can look upon the Garand as being "made" for 4895. There are other powder makers that have offerings that work well, though. Hodgdon's Varget is an excellent performer in the Garand.
The most recent Hornady reloading manual has a section devoted just to the Garand if you you want other ideas. According to that manual, Vihtavuori N-150 is probably the way to go with the 168 grain Hornady A-Max match bullets.
I use WW 748 (46-50 grains) with 147-150 grain .308" FMJ military surplus bullets and WW large rifle primers in my Springfield 1943 Garand.
Works well.
Hello!...Here is a fabulous website with a repint of M1Garand reloading data courtesy of the NRA...
You'll want to bookmark this site , as there are many other relaoding pages as well...
I've used several of the suggested Garand loads here with satisfaction...
I'm using 47.5 gr of IMR 4895 and 150 gr FMJ bullets. There's a problem here in that this load is so good that both of my Garands should an order of magnitude better than I.
