There will be a 50-shot John C. Garand Memorial Match on Sunday, March 05, 2006 at the George Huffman Range (Bayou Rifles Juliff range) - South of Houston about 30 miles.

If you need to borrow a Garand, they will be available. There is a quick "clinic" on how to load the Garand without getting your thumb mashed, how to use the sling in seated and prone, and the general course of fire. All you need is ear plugs/muffs, eye protection, and a desire to shoot. A long-sleeve shirt / shooting coat is not a bad idea; people will lend you a spotting scope, mat, and probably a shooting coat if you need one.

Match fee is $20 and includes ammunition. Registration is 7-7:30 AM.

If you are interested, let me know and I will send you the .pdf file / match program, and answer whatever questions you might have. This is a *fun* match - usually lots of new people and no one is too terribly serious - except about safety. It is to get you hooked on Highpower.

You get a match bulletin with you name on it - proof of 50 shots fired for score, so you can get your Garand from the CMP.

Regards,
Andrew

Glad to hear you are having a M-1 shoot. Price seems right too with ammo included. We are having a M-1 shoot on the 8th of April in Okanogan WA. Same deal only the M-1 savy shooters shoot first then give one on one instruction, coaching encouraged. I'm taking at least 2 M-1's and plenty of clips with the idea of loaning rifles/equipment.

I wanted to point out the CMP has gotten pretty liberal (did I say that?) on what they will use for rounds fired. Any CCW, ex-GI, LE, NRA classification card, range membership and even a note from mommy (range master) saying you have fired at least 50 rounds of something will work. I'm sure there are others listed on the web siteas well.

P-32,

Thanks for the reply. We usually mix the new shooters with the regulars, so there is someone in the pits to show them how to pull targets, as well as on the line, to "emulate."

I'm disgusted. No one has contacted me about this match. Maybe some people will just show up - maybe there was enough info in the original post that they did not need more - but I'm afraid that of all the Houston-area people on THR, none of them are interested.

It is about the best "deal" in the USA; $20 and a morning of your time, and you get the loan of the rifle, the ammo, and the clinic - and the match bulletin. You don't even have to clean the rifle. Oh well.
