I going to buck the trend and say Swiss rifle first. Even though i favor the Garand!

Why you ask?

Simpson LTD in IL is running a special on K11 Carbines. 20% off all K-11 carbine in stock. You can pick one up for less than 250. YOu also get to pick the exact rifle you will be receiving from the website. You can inspect side and top view of the rifle you will be purchasing.

After the K11, then get a CMP Garand. Don't wait too long on both these guns though..

When you buy from the CMP you must sign a sworn statement that the gun is for personal use. However some in our society have no honor and their word means nothing.

Obviously that is hard to enforce when they are shipping the guns, but I can't imagine they would let dealers swoop down on their brick and mortar stores...

You'd go with a K11 vs a K31?

The K31 (or K11) will probably be more accurate than the Garand, and use cheaper ammo...

No kiiddin... cheaper ammo?

What does that 7.5 go for these days and is it available by the case? I'd love to have that reason for buying one.

About 55c/round (I just ordered from sgammo.com). You might be able to find cheap surplus .30-06 a little cheaper, or handload cheaper, but the Swiss surplus is top-notch quality and really hard to beat. I was making hits yesterday on a 20" plate at 500m with my Gew1911, shooting prone on my elbows without bag, rest, etc.

My two cents is this. I bought a K31 a few years back and it is THE surplus rifle. It is the smoothest best shooting rifle. In fact it is the only rifle with open sights I can shoot my steel plates at 100yds with complete confidence. It is scary accurate. The straight pull bolt is so smooth and really makes shooting it fun.
