I field stripped my garand for the first time in a long time, and something's not right after reassembly...
I reassembled it so everything fit back together ok. I had a little trouble remembering how the bullet guide, follower arm and operating rod catch went back together, so I got on surplusrifle.com and followed their reassembly pics...
After the rifle was assembled, I tested the function...
Problem: when the op rod is pulled back, the bolt does not stay open. It appears the bolt does not go back far enough to get behind the follower. Either the bolt needs to go back farther, or the follower is too far back. I don't see what the problem is, since I fit everything back as per the excellent pics on surplusrifle.com.
Any suggestions? I now have the trigger group removed and the upper assembly off and ready to fix whatever's wrong.
thanks!
