So my birthday is a couple days away (10th, for what its worth), and its been a while since ive bought any thing other than ammo. Today i picked up a Springfield M1. ive had one for 2 years now, but it was a Century and have been looking to get a REAL Garand...i was just waiting to have the cash. . I also have noticed fellow THR'ers mention a month with the year thier Garand was made. Are there any markings on the rifle that will tell its year and/or month of manufacture. Any help would be great. Hopefully pics will soon follow.

They are generally dated by the serial number on the receiver. However, when the Garands were rebuilt or refurbished, they may have mixed the parts. Mine is a H & R built during the Korean War. The ones with the most matching parts are generally more valuable. On mine the barrel and receiver match and the barrel is in pretty decent shape. I traded another guy for a bolt, so now the bolt is H & R as well. Makes little difference to me as I bought it to shoot it. I don't have the website with the production times handy, but I'm sure someone else will oblige.

Scott Duff's book "M1 Garand: An Owner's Guide" has the list. I think this is the same list, but I don't have my copy of the book on me at the moment, so don't hold me to it. Note that this will tell you when the receiver was manufactured, not the rifle you have (see second post for details).
