My newly refinished Garand is a beauty, SA Nov. 1943-made.

It came with a couple small problems- the recoil spring was rusty, despite the wonderful park job and new wood. The recoil spring broke, first time at the range. A new "extra power" Garand spring from Wolff is in there now. Not worth sending it back over that; I really like this one.

The bolt face is pitted, and marks the primer correspondingly. Couple of my Mausers have pitted bolt faces (though a ring shape). I've read some Garand bolt face pitting is not a problem, is this so? A new bolt is about $125.

Last- I'm concerned. Rifle shoots way left on target. I had to to loosen and tap the front sight all the way left, and adjust the rear sight all the way right for it to zero. That ain't right.

What could be doing that? Could something be wrong with the rear sight? The rifle does have a new Criterion barrel installed.

Thanks for ideas & input.

Wow that is a lot of adjustment...!

1. Is the front sight base indexed dead center?
2. Is the barrel slightly turned?
3. Is the rear sight base indexed dead center?
4. Is the stock pushing on one side of the barrel?
5. Is there a goof or nick in the muzzle crown?

I was thinking the barrel (and thus the front sight) might be canted as well. Same thing happened to my friend's FR-8--he had the sights adjusted all the way to one side, and it still shot off-center.

You are correct, this isn't right. When you say it has a new barrel installed, the rifle should go right back to the installer and tell him to fix the problem.

I would guess something is very wrong with the barrel. It sounds like it is bent left. I hope the receiver was not messed with during the installation, causing a problem with ii?

To be off that far I don't think it would not just be an index problem (installed top dead center) to cause that much of a problem. It would have to be grossly off from vertical to throw you that far left. You can check this by putting the rifle in some kind of stand and put a level on the rear sight base and across the front sight base or even the front sight. If these are reasonably level either the barrel is bent or the receiver has some kind of a problem.

The barrel is not properly timed. It needs to be re-indexed..

Get rid of the Wolf "extra-power" spring...they cause more trouble than they are worth. Get a standard USGI spring, they are available from several online soures.

Thanks.

The rifle shot 10-12" left at 25 yds., before the broken spring cut short the session.

A laser boresight is indicating the same result here at the house, and it takes the sight full right to bring the dot in the sights.

Would like to be sure before returning it. Anything else I can do to troubleshoot?

For the rifle to be delivered to you with that extreme a shooting problem, THERE IS NO EXCUSE :cuss:. Return it and tell the installer it is his problem to correct.

Garand

Did I see you on this forum in a discussion room talking about the Garand Guy? If so, both
my Garands from him have the same problem, but not as severe as yours.

+1 on both statements.

I have a savage 840 with almost the same problem. Shoots way high and to the right no matter what I do with the sights.
