Hi all,
Well, the answer to the quiz is "extractors." It seems that extractors kept coming up the most in the 1943 Winchester production run. First in May, then June but the biggest was in Oct. Ordnance writes "Extractors breaking and much time spent testing and examining extractors." The next biggest problem was the retooling in Feb. of 1943 and changing over several thousand rifles from old style to the new style, but that's another quiz. If you think about it, the breaking of the extractor takes the M1 Garand out of action the fastest, as the bolt comes apart. OK, here's one of my old time tricks. Get your wife or girlfriend to buy the brightest red nail polish they can find. Next time you have the bolt apart, paint the extractor spring and plunger and the ejector and its spring and plunger with that red nail polish. If your extractor gets away from you at the range and you're shooting on dirt or cement, those red springs are easier to find. Next, place a small amount of that red nail polish on the back of your front sight at the top. The reason for all this is that ever since you knew which way was up, your brain and eye have been taught to track the color red. You do it without thinking. Red police car lights, fire trucks, stop signs and of course, red traffic lights. Soooo, when your eye and brain look out your rear peep, it will spot that red faster. It also looks great at the 6 o'clock position on that black 'X' ring. Oh, and also carry all spare parts for the bolt in the butt of your rifle.
Hope you had fun with this one.
Thanks again
Clancy
