heres the odd question of the day.

every source i see says that for a bullet to use a gas check, it must be specifaccly designed for a gas check. ie, a thinner section at the base for it to go on.

Yet in the hornady catalog, it shows the gas checks being applied to there REGULAR lead bullets.
 
A Lee bullet sizing kit will attach a gas check without a cutout on the base. It swages the bullet as the check is applied.
 
In general, yes. You can only apply Hornady gas checks to bullets that are made for them. OTOH, there are thin soda can gas checks that are specifically made for regular bullets.
