It is an accepted fact that using the wrong ammo in a gas port garand will bend the op-rod. Is this true with the gas trap garands or does the system vent pressure when the bullet enters the extension?
There aren't a whole lot of these around that are being used as shooters instead of retired as valuable collectors items, so I don't think the question has come up anywhere I've looked.
If I had one, and somehow felt inclined to shoot it, I wouldn't feed it anything except GI spec military ball ammo.
There are repo parts being made again for the gas trap. And I forget who. One of my favorite gun plummers asked if I was ready for him to build one for me. I said Ahhhhhh, No.
There's a gas trap Garand on GunBroker bid at $45,000 and that didn't clear the reserve price. I doubt ammo sensitivity is an issue since I can't imagine anyone will be shooting one.
I have met shooters from the Army Markmanship Teams of the 50's. Operating rods bent with match ammunition of the period.
If you overaccelerate the operating rod it is going to bend. It probably flexes during normal operation.
The M14, a product improved Garand, its operating rod is short and stiff. It is much hard to bend the shaft, though the saddle section will bend if the operating rod is off center.
John Garand's gas system is not self compensating. Though I really don't know much about the limitations or advantages of the Gas Trap system, as I cannot afford one of those.
