Well my daughter had been useing one of my mouse guns to carry in the car as she's out late at night with the boyfriend. Anyway I told her she needed a larger caliber gun for protection as the 25 really wasn't designed for that and yes I know it looked "Cute and Small", it just wasn't going to cut it. So I ask her to pick one of my others and she said that since the 25 was a Taurus PT25 she liked the looks of the Taurus PT58S I have in 380 ACP. All the controls were in the same place and she could rack it back easier than the 25. Yes I hear all of you thinking that 380 is minimal for SD, but at least I got her to take something that has been a standard in Europe for decades, and she's not afraid to shoot it. I've put a few hundred rounds thru the PT58 and it has been 100% reliable, and at close range it makes nice big holes in the target. Since Texas passed the law about car carry without a license I don't have to worry about the police taking her in for no CHL as long as she keeps it in the car or her boyfriends apt. when she's there. Any other fathers done this with any of their children? Now all I have to do is get her to take the CHL tests.

No, but I can't wait until I can. Of course it's no 'ole .45 but I think the .380acp will do her fine especially if she can be convinced to come shoot her "cute" pistol with dad for practice or training.

The .380 is a fine caliber. If she is comfortable shooting it, then let her carry it. People take this caliber thing way too far. a .380 with hollow points is plenty adequate SD gun.

Good for her!

Nothing short of .50 BMG is suitable ;)

Just kidding. the .380 is a good round, this reminds me that I need to get a CCW so I can at least have it in my car at all times.

.380 is a good caliber and ammo for it has come a long ways. Hell I carry a .32 acp a lot of the time and don't think twice about it. Its small, easy to carry and way better then a pointy stick.

Good on ya!

No daughter (or any other children) for me. But my nieces and nephews are at least gonna be .22 shooters!

I have offered to give my daughter a weapon for self protection but she keeps turning the offer down. She lives alone in an apartment complex right now and I worry about her as any father would. As it turns out, she feels secure enough in that she is considered a deadly weapon as a Marine and would be charged as such if she got into an altercation. I still worry.

If it wasn't so damned hot there I'd seriously consider moving to Texas. Any more talk of secession? :p

That surprises me Hoosier. As a Marine she should be well aware that being prepared for ANY kind altercation is just that. Being properly prepared. I'm sure that H2H she can handle herself, but what if said BG is armed. And this is comming from a Former LINE instructor. Does she live on base?

She is reserves and I think she is afraid it could get stolen while she is at work. I did pick up a Beretta 92FS that she loves to shoot and may give that to her. I really don't think she would object.

My Dad gave me an officers' model Colt in 32-20 when my husband was in Iraq the first time. It kind of goes with the 32-20 92 Winchester carbine. It's too big to carry concealed but despite it's age the revolver is still deadly accurate. And while the 32-20 is even more underpowered than the .380 the fact remains a 32 ball in chest is still more deadly than a 45 ball going through the window or ceiling. Truthfully, in a situation I would be compelled to shoot, I would use the SAIGA 20 ga. A bunch of OO buck would be better than one 32 or 9mm.

get her a good lock box at the same time. Personally I despise the 92f's, but if it works for her, more power to the both of ya. Semper FI, from a broken down ol' Comm Sergeant

I have given all three of my boys 12 gauge pump guns. My daughter gets the .38 snubby as soon as she gets time to take the basic SD course.

Well, you're lucky if she'll settle for a .380. My daughter prefers .44 Special or .45 ACP.

But what does she know, anyway -- she's six.

:what:

I thought about a .380 for my upcoming 10 year old step daughter, wanted to get her a cheetah, then I read about the difficulty in racking that sucker. I'll probably end up getting her a 9mm when she's ready.

Good for you and good for her.
My little girl carries a 1911. She just likes it.
But, every woman is different. My wife carry's a j frame. Go figure

32-20 is no slouch load. Just look what Chas Bronson did with one in "Death Wish."

Really, the 32-20 is a good cartridge. It isn't less powerful than the .380, just smaller diameter.

It's a father's greatest honor to give a firearm to their child. Even more so for a daughter to me, as women are targets for evil. I have the responsibility of enabling my wife and daughter to protect themselfs.

Congradulations on the pick. 380 is great choice for the situation, and moving from a 25 to 380 is a jump.

I got my daughter started shooting .22 and bought her a Walther when she was ready for it. She kept that and shot it a lot for about 6 months, until she wanted something larger. We narrowed down her choices to a few models, then went to Larry's for A vs. B vs. C comparisons. We thought we were looking for 9mm, but after testing she decided on a Smith & Wesson .40c with Trijicons. She liked the "more decisive" recoil of the .40. Gotta love it.

The key, I think, was taking frequent trips to the range to shoot the wheels off the .22.

Without intending to hijack the thread, can somebody direct me to details about the changes to carry laws in Texas that allow you to tote in your car without a permit?

she's out late at night with the boyfriend
That might be the most dangerous!:neener:

All kidding aside, good step up from the 25. My wife likes her j-frame smith, in 38 special.

I'm not sure about detail but know this. Before my Cousin died he was a Constable in Harris County. I asked him and he asked another cop and reported back that in fact it was perfectly legal to carry in the vehicle.

I understand the Harris County DA doesn't actually like/believe it and will give you trouble....

Up here in my neck of the woods no prob!
