What were you thinking when you made small pistol primer pockets in 45auto brass?

I bought 800 pieces of brass Saturday I just sorted it and probably 15% have small primer pocket. These would have screwed up my reloading with my Dillon press.

yeah I hate that.........still haven't made it thru all my brass to toss them all out..I would say they did it for 'cost reduction' but seems like it would cost them more to change the equipment all around for a smaller hole?

OK people, a quick effort to make Mike feel better?

Mike! How about a .25 inside a .32, the .32 is in a .380/9mm, the 9 is in a .40 and the .40 is in a .45. And then you find out your tremendous precious has a small primer pocket. And then you break your decapper. and and..

I now take one more step while loading 45ACP. I spend about 1/2 of a second more by looking at the face of the brass before feeding it into my press. SPP brass gets thrown in another bin. When I collect enough, I load them separately.

Blazer brass is also a headstamp to look out for.

SPP 45ACP is not a pain, only keeping them sorted is. I keep my brass separated, but sometimes range pickup SPP gets mixed in with the LPP brass. Performance is identical.

They drive me nuts too sorting them. However, my LNL doesn't like to feed large primers consistently, but smalls are no problem. Hmmm.... Send 'em all to me, I won't even charge ya!

I'll take em off your hands! honestly, I prefer them, the small pistol primers are much easier to seat on my lee turret press, they give me another option in case god forbid I run out of large pistol primers first and If im shooting 45 next to someone who does the same and reloads, I simply pull out my small pistol primer brass that I load up with copper colored tula small rifle primers. much easier to keep track of eachothers brass that way. I guess I cant complain much because my range is littered with brass and each range trip I spend a few minutes combing the field for 45. Ive tracked down about 1500 pieces of brass in the past month and a half.

I wouldn't mind if all mine were small primer pockets. I switch back and forth between 9mm, 40, 38, and 45 so often it would really simplify things.

Being as I use SRP for all my handgun loads that require small primers it works out well for me.

Reason being for the use of SRP is that I have many many sleeves of them that I purchased years ago at a close-out.

Changing something that has worked for a hundred years is like the New Coke debacle. I'll bet the guys who thought that one up weren't around very long.

There's been about eleventy hundred threads on this subject, with the correct explanations of why it's being done. Just do a search. And to help you with the search, type in "Diazodinitrophenol". If you're the short hand type, you can put in "DDNP". Either of those should keep you reading for a couple of hours.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I've counted 8 different head stamps of 45 acp with small primers.
Probably going to have to get used to it.
