’m going to be heading down to St. Simon’s Island for our annual sojourn a bit early this year - we usually head down the last week of August but because of school schedules we’re heading down the first week - and was starting to plan the fun parts. In addition to brining my kayak, I’m going to go shark fishing one day and the other day my wife suggested I bring my rifle and go take in a bit of feral hog hunting in the swamps and coastal swamps.

Seeing as hogzilla was shot not far from there, that struck me as a wonderful idea.

However, I don’t really know my way around inland Southeast Georgia (and the wife’s family has no idea - their beach people), which leads to this question …

Does anyone know the area who could giv eme some guidance as to where I might find some feral swine?? Or, are their any THRs around that first week who might want to head out for some pork shooting???

If not, can anyone recommend an outfitter?? The coast is pretty short there, so I’d really be willing to hook up with any outfitter between Jacksonville, FL and Savanahha, GA (and maybe into South Carolina a bit - its only about 1 1/2 hours from Savana to Jacksonville).

Appreciate any insight.

Georgia DNR has this great brochure, and one of the largest populations of feral hogs in the country (they've been running around the coast since the 1600s or so.

Might check out the web site for Fort Stewart. Last time I was there it was open to the public. Lots of hogs there, but it takes a while to get certified through hunt control. You might be able to email them and get all of the requirements knocked out ahead of time. I could probably look at the map and figure out some of the better spots that I remember, but there is no telling whether they will be open on the days you'll be there due to training and controlled burns. PM me if you're interested. Keep in mind that I haven't been there in over four years.

Couple of good WMA's in SE Georgia. Any of them hold plenty of hogs since they are all over the state.

Pick a place near your vacation area, drive around and look for swamps, ponds or creeks, grab your gun and have at it. Not too hard to see where a pack of hogs have been. Looks like a rotor tiller went thru.

We hunted Horse Creek WMA to the Northwest of where your going to be. It was awesome for hogs and turkey. Also, try Griffin Ridge. Its an awesome place that hasn't been open for too long. Tons of hogs in there as the WMA is up against the river and there is plenty of swamps. Biggest hog I've ever seen in Georgia was there and my buddy almost got run over by him. We were bowhunting that area the first year it was open.

Closer to St Simon is the Altamaha WMA which is pretty big. I didn't do any hunting there but did do some scouting and found plenty of hog, deer and turkey sign everywhere. Roads were pretty accessible as I can remember.

We are now here in California but my wife is from Ga. I may go back in the fall. The folks who have the Marina in Richmond HIll, Ga. also take folks out for hogs. I don't have a name.
