Key points:
1. The intruder (Keller) was apparently high on something "other than alcohol".
2. He had entered one other house.
3. He was combative when taken to the hospital - and could have been more even dangerous if he had been armed.

Snippet:
The man shot by a Georgia Tech student after he broke into a house just off campus early Tuesday was apparently a neighbor who was high on drugs and thought he was at his own home, police said.

The intruder, identified as Adam Keller, 23, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, APD spokeswoman Kim Jones said. She said Keller was "combative and had to be subdued for medical attention."

I am of the belief that while under the influence, you may do things that you wouldn't normally do, by choosing to take the drugs you are responsible for everything that happens while you're high. The obvious exceptions are 1) if someone drugs you without your knowledge or consent, or 2) legally obtained prescription drugs, in which case you should put yourself in a position where you won't do anything stupid.

If someone breaks in thinking its their house and they meet me, what's to stop them from thinking I'm the intruder? Either way, if someone is in my house uninvited, especially if they're combative, you bet I'm going to defend myself.

Even then you should have a right to protect yourself and your property from a deranged person as you have no way to know why they are in your house or what they might do.

True. I was just saying, when people take drugs and blame the drugs on what happened while they were high - no, it was your own fault for taking them in the first place. "It wasn't me that broke in, it was the drugs!" No, smeghead, it was you.

I also wasn't suggesting that you shouldn't defend yourself if the person was unintentionally high, just that I would press charges against whoever slipped drugs in their drink instead of against them.

Agreed 100%. Drugs or alcohol may be the reason, but it's not an excuse.
