Seven people were found shot execution-style about 10:00 p.m. Thursday night. A young girl was found outside the home at 560 N. Hamilton Avenue crying that a family member had been shot.

IPD is conducting an extensive search for 28-year-old Desmond Turner of Indianapolis, whom they believe may responsible for the shooting. Turner is a convicted violent offender. Police are calling the incident a home invasion and say the killings were not gang-related.

Neighbors told police that they heard several gunshots when two women entered the home earlier in the evening.

The hispanic family lived in two apartments in the home. Police say the dead include four adults and three children. The children were found together in one bed. Their ages are eleven, eight and five. Police do not know if the children were sleeping or hiding.

At the scene overnight, Mayor Bart Peterson called the murders 'horrific."

Police say the five-year-old's mother came to the home to pick up her child and discovered the bodies.

At a news conference Friday morning, police said Turner and another suspect they did not identify were likely in the home. Assault rifles were used in the killings.

"Assault rifles were used in the killings" - Heck, the press calls everything an assault rifle, including firearms that are legally defined as NOT an assault rifle. Between that and all the "Glock revolvers" color me skeptical on the correct identification of the weapon...

Heck, at least they didn't mention a "black Glock police style handgun." My local newsrag must have that phrase bound to a macro key or something they use it so much.

You know, it's not like the perp was using the limited edition, serial number 00003 pink plastic Hello Kitty edition (with hardwood collector's case).

Bart:

It's similar to when the news reports any traffic incident when an SUV is involved. I constantly hear them report something such as:

"A woman was killed by an SUV this morning, when it suddenly veered into her path...."

The article starting the thread, says "Assault rifles were involved in the killings...".

So according to news editors, I guess the phrase "A typewriter mispelled a word today" is an acceptable journalistic description.

Why are convicted violent felons allowed to walk the streets is the real question. Not what kind of object he used to continue his nefarious ways.

The perpetrators are:

1. Not white guys
2. Still alive

Point 1 limits the hay they can make out of the story.
Point 2 means that there are living people to take out retribution upon - this remains a "criminal at large" story, not a "well, they're dead, someone has to pay" story.

"The gun or guns used were what was commonly referred to as assault rifles. That does not necessarily mean they were automatic. It means it was a long gun of some sort. Long gun or guns or some sort. Multiple shell casings throughout the home," said Foley.

So now "assault rifle" = "long gun".
And this is coming from the Indianapolis Police Department Deputy Chief?

Funny I was under the impression that an "assault rifle" does mean they are selective fire rifles that fire intermediate size rounds.

I think the media's definition is any projectile firing object that is not a Glock.
More ammo for the Brady Bunch even though you can bet the gun(s) weren't purchased legally anyway.

How does anyone know at this point *what* make or model of rifle was used? If the rounds were .223 they could have been from a Mini-14. I'm sure the autopsies aren't complete yet and the forensic evidence hasn't been thoroughly examined. I would believe it if they said the weapons used were rifles, since the damage done by a rifle would generally be easily discernible from the damage done by a handgun.

It seems like sloppy police work to begin an investigation with what may very well be erroneous information. Are they going to canvass the neighborhood and seize everybody's AR within shouting distance like they did in MD?

:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

I think what the Deputy Chief is saying is, "long guns" equal "assault rifles"

Which means in media speak, all long guns are bad. And of course, all short guns are bad also.

If a certified police officer is holding an assult rifle (according to what I learned on "Cops" television from one of the SWAT guys) then the "assualt" rifle is called an "Urban Law Enforcement Firearm".
