INDIANAPOLIS -- Police said a man who broke into a home in a robbery attempt was killed by the home's owner in a shootout early Monday morning on Indianapolis' west side.

The shooting happened at about 2 a.m. at the home in the 200 block of North Tremont Street at Turner Avenue during what police called a home invasion and attempted robbery, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

Investigators identified the man who was shot as Mark Yant, 22. He was found in the street, about a half block away from the home.

Yant was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the man forced his way into the home and ran out the back of the house after he had been shot.

The man inside the home, Eric Williams, 36, exchanged gunfire with Yant, police said. Detectives said a door might have saved Williams when Yant fired.

"I believe they retrieved the bullet from his gun lodged in the door frame. So Mr. Williams ... the homeowner, was not hurt," said Indianapolis police Maj. Lloyd Crowe.

Investigators said Williams' sister was also inside the home at the time of the shooting. She was not injured.

According to investigators, Williams legally obtained a handgun after he was robbed in his home in October.

"Bearing arms ... in someone's private home ... runs very deep in American history. So, Mr. Williams had every right to have that firearm in his home and protect himself and his property from unlawful entry or serious bodily injury, which he could have faced," Crowe said.

Williams told police that he did not know the intruder. The prosecutor's office will decide if Williams acted in self-defense in the shooting.

'Cause Lord knows we don't face any dangers when we're not in our private homes. Shame they left "in someone's private home" out of the Second Amendment.
