Getting a C&R

I am looking into getting a C&R.

How much will it cost, what do I need to do? Any general advice any C&R holders can give me will be appreciated.

So true on how much it REALLY costs me. I hope I don't waste my college savings.
 
I received mine a few months ago and it has already paid for itself 3 times over.

When you get it make plenty of copies and sign only the copies. Then you can send a copy to Midway, Brownells, AIM,,, and the list goes on and on.
 
Starting the process myself. Just go to the ATF page and request the form (I believe type 7 CR) and fill it out. $30 for the license good for 3 years.
 
Serious questions...

What are the negatives? Stringent requirements? I know it sounds bad...but if i do it just to get the pricing from brownells, ect, is it really worth it?

The worst that could happen is that the ATF would ask you to bring your bound book into the nearest field office for an audit, but this is rare I hear and they can only do it once a year (or was it once every three years?).
It is not like an 01FFL where they can come to the address on the license to do an audit of the books, records and inventory.

By the way, the license is only good for three years before you have to renew it, so it comes out to ten dollars a year.

and when it expires you can just toss your bound book. No requirement to send it in to the ATF like an 01 FFL.

Well, that's good news because I thought that only an 01 FFL got a discount.

Recently I bought a handgun online. When it arrived at the FFL's place, he told me that there would be no waiting period if I had a C&R license.

What are the storage requirements-- a safe?

Apparently, there are benefits to possessing this license. (lightbulb on)

Just what ever your local laws are regarding storage. Nothing added by the ATF/FedGov when you get a C&R.

ETA: Some people get upset when they find out they need to send a copy of the application to their local Chief LEO. This is for notification only, as required by ATF. Your CLEO does not have to approve it or run a background check, charge a fee, etc...if you can walk into your local gun shop and buy a gun following all your local/fed laws, there is no reason for your CLEO to have any concern over your application. Most will just "file" it...(if they even know what it's all about).
 
Mine is scanned into the computer, along with state picture identification, ready for email it to a prospective buyer/seller.

Just one $100 purchase of tools/parts/supplies from Brownells will pay the three-year fee. Once in their system, one can see their regular price, and their discount price.

Vendors treat it as an FFL, which it is. The difference is that it is an 03, rather than an 01.

My fantasy? Performing routine trade work, and happening upon a widow with a basement full of boxes of assorted pre-1957 1911 frames [slides, etc]. All this loot is perfectly legal to purchase on the spot with your Type 03 FFL.

The people at the C&R department, should you have any address changes or questions, are very, very friendly. They WANT you to buy guns, and enjoy your hobby. We protect American firearm history.
 
When filling the forum out I guess you are filling it out for the F3 in part 2. Correct.
 
Don't know about scanning it into the computer and emailing it, of course you can use your computer to send to a fax machine...

But, you can FAX a signed copy, although some places still prefer a mailed copy (or don't know the rules have changed to allow a fax copy).

How many days did it take for you to receive the application?

I regret not requesting two applications because a friend decided to apply for a license after I told him about it.

Making Xerox copies is an idea but would the ATF object?
 
spooney, if the CLEO has a problem (like you cannot legally possess and he knows why) then he calls the ATF. Otherwise, he can't do squat.

I have my app sitting next to me, filled out and ready. I just need to make copies and start mailing.

Question: Does the ATF get pissy if the application gets tri-folded in an envelope; does it need to go in a big manilla envelope?
 
That seems sort of pointless to me but cool. I requested the forms last night so hopefully I can get this filled out and sent off soon.
