Besides paying $200, how much hassle is it to buy a Class III firearm? Does the amount of hassle vary much from state to state? Are you open to inspections or other difficulties once you own a Class III gun? Thanks for any enlightenment.

It depends on the local CLEO signoff more than anything else. I think in the PRM it's the state police... In VA it's the Sheriff or CoP for your jurisdiction. I do understand that upon approval by ATF, the local law does get notified that you possess a MG or Suppressor, or AOW - that's what registration does for you... I'm not aware of any circumstances in which this has been a problem...

Think about it- Do you think the cops are going to come by the house of a MG owner and give them a bunch of stuff? Heck no!

I have 4 Class III firearms. No hassle, no problem here in GA. Simply pick out what you want, fill out the paper work (I don't screw around with going to the Chief of Police in my County), I merely go the GBI headquarters and have it signed off by the person in charge of firearms division (chuck severs, heck of a nice guy). file the paper work and pay for whatever I've picked out.

The hardest thing about the whole process is waiting (usually 2 - 3 months) for approval.

I hope this helped a little.

I have 1 Class 3 weapon and as Highpower stated, GA is a very easy to obtain state. The hardest part was finding a place to take a passport size photo. I never thought about going straight to the GBI to have my form signed off on. I ended up going to see my CLEO. When I went there were three other guys waiting to have CLEO sign off on their form 4's. He did it and didn't say a word about it.

I think the investment is worth while. With the price of Class III's today, you could turn around and sell it in a year and it will have doubled in price. The hardest thing is getting started.

Most photo development sections in stores like Walmart or Walgreens as well as actual camera shops can make passport photos for you.

My town Police were kind enough to take the pics and prints for me there at the station, no charge. I left the Form 4 with the Chief, and picked it up a few days later.

The biggest PITA about class III is I can take $30,000 cash money to a dealer.

Fill out FOUR form 4's because the way the dealer explained it, you cant make more than one transaction on one form for 2 rifles with 2 supressors.

Then the govt will review everything and the dealer will get 4 different phone calls from herr Treasury department telling me when I can pick up each individual item. And if I'm lucky all 4 calls will be withinn a few weeks of each other.

What a country!

I am thinking about it as well. It seems to be a big hassle where I am at as the local sheriff will never sign off on them. So, it seems like it will take a lot of persistence.

But, then I also wonder, do I want to be registered with the ATF. Do any of you ever worry about being one of the relatively few that have your name with the ATF? And I also do not like the idea of the ATF searching my house at any time without cause or notice. It makes me edgy not because I am or would be doing anything illegal, but that they would know me, know what I have, as they would see all the firearms when they come to look at my machine gun or whatever I would have, and I get concerned about what would hapopen if they ever do start trying to truely ban guns or confiscate guns. Should I just be happy with my less well known status and semi-autos?

As far as I know, getting approved for a MG does not make you a felon and the ATF has no right to search your house just because you own one. Why would they when they approved you for the darned thing? Same thing with a C&R license, which I also have.

Ever buy a gun and fill out a yellow form? Then it's a little late to worry about your name being "known".

That is a myth. ATF cannot enter your house and search it unless they get a search warrant just like any other LEO. They can ask to see your documentation for your NFA weapons, but that is all.

I bought my first NFA weapon 20 years ago and have had my C&R FFL for almost 20 years and have yet to be visited by ATF.

You ever buy a firearm from a dealer? Ever had a CCW? Been a member of the NRA or other firearm club? Ever subscribed to a gun related magazine? Ever bought ammunition or firearm accessories using a credit card?

There are many ways a person could be tied to firearms should the .gov ever decide to start confiscating guns. Don't worry about it.

Yes, that's true, I do have a CC license, have filled out many, many yellow forms, am a life NRA member, as well as members of GOA, Ohioans for CC, local ranges, etc, etc. It probably wouldn't be too hard to figure out.

AKAIK there are no 4th ammendment violations (wait, I mean mandatory waivers :) for Form 4 type of things (MGs, SBR, Suppressor.)

However, CA law does provide the following:

12230. The Department of Justice may issue permits for the possession, manufacture, and transportation or possession, manufacture, or transportation of machineguns, upon a satisfactory showing that good cause exists for the issuance thereof to the applicant for the permit, but no permit shall be issued to a person who is under 18 years of age.

12234. (a) Except as provided in subdivision (b), the Department of Justice shall, for every person, firm, or corporation to whom a permit is issued pursuant to this article, annually conduct an inspection for security and safe storage purposes, and to reconcile the inventory of machine guns.
(b) A person, firm, or corporation with an inventory of fewer than five devices that require any Department of Justice permit shall be subject to an inspection for security and safe storage purposes, and to reconcile inventory, once every five years, or more frequently if determined by the department.

I guess it is amazing that they allow MG posession at all!

I have never known of ANY individual owner of an NFA item to be even contacted by BATF, let alone harassed or his home searched. The only conceivable reason for something like that would be if they thought an item registered to him had turned up in the wrong hands, and even then he would be questioned, not "harassed", unless there was a real problem.

BATF is subject to the same requirements for a warrant as any other LE agency; registration of an NFA item does not make an exception.

As mentioned above, though, that applies to BATF. State or local law may be different. As usual, California sounds like a pure Fascist state, run by power mad lunatics. And I thought MD was bad.

You find the weapon you want, then fill out the paperwork for that weapon. If you want a suppressor or a second weapon then you fill out the paperwork again. Have passport pics and fingerprints taken. Have it signed off by the local CLEO and send it in to the ATF with $200 tax per item. Wait. :)

ok, so once you get a licence, where can you buy a fully auto rifle? where can i get and how much would a M4 be?
There is no license. As stated, you pay a one-time tax of $200 when you buy a machinegun. A M4(M16) will run you about $10,000.

As stated above the is no Federal license, but there may be a State license. (I have a Mass. Machine Gun License, for example).
