I've seen several people on different forums mention that they own Class III machine guns, SBR's, suppressors etc. in the state of Massachusetts. This kinda puzzled me knowing how harsh MA is with their gun laws so I went to the NRA website and looked at the laws. By my reading it doesn't seem like the average person could get a Class III license. Can anyone here who lives in MA give me the straight scoop? I'm very curious to know the real deal, and would be very confused if you could own Class III weapons yet not able to buy a freakin Glock. :banghead:

Currently, the only people being issued MG permits (as they are called here in MA) are the State Police.

AFAIK, no new MG permits will be issued unless for a LEO.

Mass Class III

I know two none LEOs who have gotten Class III (full auto) permits in the last year. Or so they said.

Respectfully,

I don't have much interest in owning them so I've never bothered to see what the actual rules are but I know/knew of at least 2 non-LEO's with full auto guns that live in my county . One , now deceased as of last year , was a dealer and the other is a collector - with quite a collection . I have no idea when their original permits were granted but , as is the case with most of our licensing laws , it boils down to the opinion of the town's CLEO . The town the collector lives in has a "shall issue" Chief when it comes to CCW , but I do not know what the laws of the Commonwealth are concerning machine guns other than IIRC there was a box to check for a permit for them on on my License to Carry application ( but to reiterate I don't know if that's an anachronism ) . The point I'm attempting to make is that there are MG owners in MA .

OT : There are many new pistols that aren't available here , it's not just Glocks . I don't miss the lack of Lorcin and Davis products in shops but I wouldn't mind a Steyr or XD . The stupidity of it is that the only thing stopping me from buying every used Glock in the shop in one day is probably my credit card limit .

There is a guy that works at Bob's Range in Salibury that has a class III I believe. You might want to give them a call and see what they say.

NOT TRUE!

I live in MA and got my MG license last Summer. I am not an LEO. There are no new laws in place saying that only LEO's can have it. Nothing has changed. As with the LTC, the decision is entirely up to your CLEO.

Here's what I did to improve my chances:

1. Already had a Class A LTC
2. Got C&R license. That proves you are a "bona fide collector" of firearms. Read the MA laws for info about that
3. Became an R.O. for my shootign group.
4. Asked to speak with the CLEO in person to dicuss who I am and why I wanted MG's. It's a lot easier to say no when you don't have to talk to a person.

Yes, it is.... um, interesting...... that I own an MP5, but cannot own a new Glock, or a suppressor.

I'm allowed to fire full-auto, I just have to be noisy when I do it.

"o) No person shall be issued a license to carry or possess a machine gun in the commonwealth, except that a licensing authority or the colonel of state police may issue a machine gun license to:

(i) a firearm instructor certified by the municipal police training committee for the sole purpose of firearm instruction to police personnel;

(ii) a bona fide collector of firearms upon application or upon application for renewal of such license."

Oops! Wrong thread. I thought this was a sad comment on the new Exorcist movie, which I heard isn't worth the cellulose acetate it was produced on.

To Clarify: Machine guns are legal here, if you have the korrekte papiere, but silencers are illegal here no matter what. Doesn't seem to stop people from complaining about noise from the local shootin' range though.

That's about the way NJ law is set up, only in NJ there has never been such a license actually issued. The courts have so much as stated that NJ's machine gun licensing system is in fact a de facto ban. In order to get a machine gun license you must show that it is needed to protect public safety and welfare and that you must also qualify for an assault weapon license which are equally never given out. I figured the same was probably true for MA, but I guess not.
