Hi, I would like a carbine in 10mm. It's been on my "want it" list for a long time. However, buying either a glock 20 or 21, at five hundred buckos, or buying an entire 1911 just to get the frame seems stupid to me.

I gather that smithing a .45 from parts is an insane proposition and I'd probably be better off with an out of the box .45 receiever from a cheapo, less-than-reliable brand than the first one I would manage to build as a newbie. To bad they don't snap together like an AR.

I am wondering, does Para Ordinance still make their HI-CAP receievers to mate with customer's uppers like they used to back in the day? Would that work for a 10mm mechtech carbine top?

Are there any good sources for the frame with parts in it that I need to complete the coveted mechtech carbine? I prefer the ergonomics of th 1911 by a long shot, so it would be my first choice, but glocks ain't bad -- so if I could find a reasonably priced glock 20 or 21 frame then I would be just as happy in the end (and have extra bullets in the mag, natch!).

Also, if I WERE going to buy some parts and a frame for a 1911, is there a route with that that would yield at least a decent GI-spec 1911 "lower" that would fit some 10mm mags and the mechtech top... or is that just a purely stupid proposition for a newbie?

I'm going to ask around at the gun show this weekend, too.

I'm in sort of the same situation as you. I want a complete 1911 receiver so I can dedicate it to my .22LR 1911 conversion kit. Not many places sell complete 1911 receivers minus barrel and slide; it appears the options are either to have a gunsmith build up a frame to your specifications or to buy a complete 1911 and then sell off the slide and barrel.

My plan is to buy a RIA 1911 Tactical and sell off the slide and barrel. The RIAs run about $425 shipped on Gunbroker. I figure I should be able to get at least $200 for the slide and barrel. $225 for a complete lower is cheaper than you'll spend on having a custom lower built up by a gunsmith. But with a gunsmith you get to choose the parts you want.

I bought a frame from a fellow THR member. It had some parts with it and I had the rest. Now I don't have the top half of a good 1911 packed away.
