I just bought my first BP off gunbroker (kinda nervous)--a Traditions Deer Hunter (.50 cal). Says it is used but in good condition.

I want to keep it simple--just want to go shoot a few rounds to get the feel. I know I need caps, balls, and powder, as well as cleaning supplies.

I have everything but powder and have a question:

Can I use the pyrodex pellets or do I have to go with granular powder since it is a sidelock? Forgive me if I mis-name something, still trying to get it all down.
thanks

You can use the pellets, but loose powder allows you to really dial in on accuracy, and costs much less. And Pyrodex may not be your friend. I don't care for how dirty it is or how quickly it corrodes.

For me it's about sharing powder with my pistol, and for that I want as much power (hunting) as I can get. I began with 3F Triple 7, and still like it, but am now likely going to stock mostly on 3F Goex Olde Eynsford powder.

I buy my powder online from Grafs, and I figure (T7) that if I buy 3 lbs I about break even with the HAZMAT fee vs buying from BassPro, and there's no driving or hassle.

Olde Eynsford is true black powder and is cheaper than T7, but gives similar results.

I'm not familiar with any other powders but those 3, but I'd choose about any other powder over Pyrodex. Black MZ gets good marks for ease of cleaning.

If you use the pellets do not load any more than two pellets (100 gr charge). I know that Traditions printed in their books that 3 is safe, it isn't. Pellets manufactures say no more than 2.
A few years back shooter were seriously injured and killed loading 3 pellets. Don't take the chance.

thanks

I appreciate all the helpful information. I will not be overloading this thing--not going to be taking any chances. Thanks for the heads up.

I just downloaded the manual and have lots of good reading to do.
thanks
