Getting an FFL.... as a collector?

I think you can only do that if you get a C&R. When I called BATFE about 4-5 years ago to inquire about that, I was told you could not get a FFL01 to enhance a private collection, but to engage in business. I wanted to get it so that I didnt have to pay ffl transfer fees on internet guns that i bought, and was going to do low cost transfers for others also, but the time and money to get everything how everybody wanted it wasnt worth it, especially since I deploy and couldnt even do it as a permanent part time thing.

Yes, an 03 FFL is for a collector of curios & relics. Your average gun shop has an 01, which you cannot get unless you plan on going into business. An 03 is for a collection, not to buy/sell/trade for profit and limits you to items on the C&R list. Plenty of fine weapons are C&R and you can easily go broke or get divorced purchasing them.
 
Another plus of the 03 C&R Collectors FFL is you can get discounts from several places. Midway USA, Numrich and Brownell's are the most popular places that give a discount to C&R holders.
 
The 03 "Collector of Curio and Relics" FFL (commonly called a "C&R") is specifically designed for individuals to use to enhance their personal collection of C&R eligible firearms.

If you get a C&R FFL you can receive C&R eligible firearms right to your door. A C&R firearm is any firearm that is at least 50 years old or any firearm specifically listed in the ATF C&R list. Many firearms less then 50 years old are on the list because of the collector interest in those guns.

Anyone who has a C&R FFL has to do recordkeeping similiar to that of a regular FFL. You basically have to maintain a "Bound Book" firearms record booka and "log in" any C&R firearm you obtain and "log out" any C&R firearm you sell, trade, or otherwise dispose of. This is true even if you did not use the C&R to acquire the firearm.

Having a C&R FFL does not give you any additional privileges in regards to non-C&R firearms. If you go to the gun store and buy a recent production gun you are the same as any other customer.

The fee is $30 for three years and it is very much worth the money. Do a search here and you'll find plenty of threads on C&R holders.

Just to add, some recent production guns can get on the C&R list if the ATF is asked to add it and they agree to because they are considered curios or rare.
Examples are short production run commemorative firearms.
