Has anyone ever done the extra barrel thing for an NEF/H&R single barrel? I have a .410 98 Topper (youth model) that I almost never shoot because of the cost of .410 ammo. I don't shoot enough shotgun ammo to be able to justify buying a loading outfit for shotshells and all my current attempts to find a redneck (low tech but effective) way of reloading .410 shells have proven unsuccessful.
Given that, I am thinking it would make more sense to just invest in a 20 gauge or 12 gauge barrel for it and call it a day. I'd keep the .410 barrel to teach new shooters or maybe pop the occasional squirrel, but other than that it would be greased and stored.
Ammo for both of them is about half the cost of equivalent .410 shells and both sling way more lead so why not?
Anyhow, has anyone done this? How much does it generally cost to have another barrel fitted? As for the barrel, I was thinking either a 20 gauge modified or maybe cylinder bore with rifle sights. I figure that if I am going to "customize" it, it would be cool to make sort of a modernized "trade gun" out of it.
I am not really a "shotgunner" in the same respect some of you guys are, but I do appreciate what a smoothbore can do. It has a use that other guns can't match up to. Any opinions on this would be helpful.
