I'm looking into High Power, most likely Service Rifle. I have a pretty good background in 3p Air Rifle and 3p and 4p smallbore (50 ft), but I'm pretty lost in HP.

My budget is flexible, but the more I spend on the rifle, the less money that will be spent on ammo and reloading supplies. I can borrow/own a spotting scope, jacket, mat, and other accessories so basically, which rifle do I want and why?

I'm pricing AR's, Garands, and M1A's, but the M1A is out of my price range. My biggest concern with the Garand is accuracy and cost of good ammo but the AR is going to cost more off the bat but ammo is going to be cheaper to reload. I also shoot much better with lower recoil so that may be and issue. I've handled a M1A and it very nice

I have a lot of resources from smallbore and air rifle coaches, so I will likely be able to shoot a match with borrowed gear.

Thanks,
HB

Your best bet is to contact your State Association through the NRA. Most have active rifle teams. They can teach you, lend you gear, make recommendations on what to buy. For Service Rifle compentition, unless your in a state where they are not allowed, the AR-15 types are dominating the sport.

Good luck

While I love my Garand, I would spend the extra money now on the AR since the long term expense will be the ammo either way and will work itself out in time.

Thanks

Thanks, I'll try a few and see what I like

Cut for an earlier post this is what I did.

$1,000 Rock River Arms National Match A2 AR15 (.223 is the easiest and cheapest to shoot)
$200 Konus 20x60x80 spotting scope (Kowa is better but 3 times more)
$200 Vin-Ray scope stand (buy once, cry once)
$50-75 Sling (I like Les Tam @ $75)
$40-60 Glove (I'm a open finger guy)
$100 Used shooting jacket off Ebay (bought my hawkeye 20 year old heavey leather jacket for $115)
$5 piece of carpet (or $75 shooting mat)
$65 Shooting stool (mine is a Creedmoor)
$25 Dewy cleaning rod
$20 Sinclair AR cleaning rod guide
$20 AR cleaning hold open
5 ~ $15 Mags (20 round)
$25 NRA membership
$150 Ammunition (400 rounds Remington 55 grain)

There you go, 2K. Now go have fun.

If you shoot short courses, the ammo will be fine your first year. Next year buy a press and make your own "match" rounds for the same cost.

Remember, Dry fire as much as you can, focus on the front sight, forget about the last shot, don't worry about the next shot, and break this shot in the X ring.

i started with an ar but now i shoot a garand and i shoot better with the garand.i think its the weight

You can make an AR weigh whatever you want. Most of the guys I know have them up at around 15lbs.

It's hard to add more than 2lbs to an M1.

I have done all three. My opinion is that you will be happier with the AR as a beginning high power shooter. They are easier to shoot well for most people and less expensive to shoot for sure.
