I've noticed recently that the rust devil has been relentlessly attacking my USP compact. It pains me to see this, as this is one of my favorites. I use it as my primary carry gun, so it could be do to sweat and/or humidity. There's also a slight bit f holster wear which I would like to take care of. I want to get the slide refinished, but I am a bit hesitant to have it done locally because I want extra care taken and I figured that HK could do as good a job as anybody. It's their product, after all. Has anyone ever sent in their slide to be refinished by the manufacturer? Does anyone know approximately how much this will run?

I highly doubt HK does the work in-house, (but they may) most manufacturers out source their work. I'm sure a good local Smith will do just as good a job and you will get your pistol back a lot faster.

We refinish semi-auto handguns at school all the time. Our process is a hot caustic bluing salt treatment. It makes the guns come out with a dark blue, almost black finish and it can either be shiny or dull depending on how the metal was finished before bluing. The school does take guns from out of state customers. They charge a small gunsmithing fee, I can't remember the exact dollar amount but it will run you something like 1/4 the cost of sending it to a local smith. You can check it out by calling the Colroado School of Trades at 1-800-234-4594. They will also do a complete disassembly and perform safety checks (ie. headspace) prior to returning it. Not a bad deal.

I did some reserch snd it sppesrs thst HK outsources the refinihing to Arizona Response Systems. From what I saw on the website, it looks lto be $125. I was expecting in the neighborhod of ~$100, so that will do. Another question though: Has anyone ever had to refinish a gun after less than a year from date of purchase? I understand that because it's a carry gun it will invariably be exposed to more wear on the finish, but is this in the realm of a normal time period for a refinish?

HK doesn't refinish guns themselves, but they get another company to do it for them - it is supposed to be like the stock finish. I don't remember the name of the company - but if U go to HKPRO.com, they can tell U.

I had mine hard chromed :)

Is there anything you haven't hard chromed Shipwreck? Your guns are all beautiful.

What did your research consist of? I know ARS makes this claim, but when I called HK they recommended Robar to me. My USP happened to already be at Robar at the time getting finished in NP3.

I had a Beretta Model 70 that had a light surface rust on it, new in the box. It appeared to be more of a problem related to the bluing process rather than from neglect. I sent it back to the factory and they reblued the entire gun, but the problem "resurfaced" a short time later. Again I suspect it was more likely the bluing procedure itself. So rather than spend $100 to have it reblued yet again, I sent it off to Metalife and had it hard chrome plated. Cost was considerably less than bluing, looks like stainless, and has shown absolutely no wear after many years of service.
