Getting old...
I'll be 56 this April. I know what you mean, although I still on occasion carry a 1911. Most times, though, I carry a S&W 642 snubbie in a DeSantis IWB. It's lighter than my S&W Model 60, and is rated for .38 spl +P. In summer, sometimes I'll pack a Beretta Tomcat in a pocket holster. The load is Winchester Silver Tips. It's also very important to invest in a good gunbelt. I get mine from Concealed Carry Clothiers. Costs around $90. Expensive for a belt, yes, but worth the cost. It is double thick, except in the front where it slims down to just one layer of leather; it's cut on a bias which distributes the weight evenly. Even a 1911 on this 1 1/4" belt is bearable (note: I did not say comfortable).

One word --- suspenders.
It was mentioned before but it's worth repeating. My brother and my old shooting buddy both shared your problem, both began wearing suspenders and the problem went away. I suggest that it's at least worth a try.

Really couldn't go for a "Fag Bag"
So I went to Wally World and bought a pair of bright red suspenders, them suckers are 1.5" wide and red red. I figure anything is worth a try.

I knew a true OFR would have to go for the suspenders. Where I grew up that was practically the uniform the OFR's.

Heavy duty "spenders" will be a good choice. Especially the ones that buttons. Look carefully at the clamps on the others as they are it's weakest points and don't last very long. The ones I've seen at the Wally Worlds around me fall in that catergory. Look in some of the specialty catalogs for real quality ones. They are worth it for the durability.

yes, that milspec 1911 do get heavy in the sidearmor iwb. never did get attracted to anything smaller than 38 spl.
i am 60; have carried for about 10 years. mostly i keep a couple of pistols (usually one large and one small) in a framed backpack that is always with me.
the small one is often a glock 26 in sidearmor iwb with j-hooks which can be quickly attatch/detatched from the belt and the shirt pulled out a bit and tucked round the butt. crotch holster (e.g. smartcarry) is another alternative, usually with suspenders rather than a belt.
other times the small one is a 5 shot s&w snubby revolver with some plastic coated +p hollowpoints, either in the crotch holster or just slipped into the front pocket.
fwiw the recently aquired smartcarry is sturdy enough but consequently rather stiff. i have an older crotch holster of much thinner material - more comfortable, fine for the snubby, but on the light side for the g-26.
