In need of a little insight.

I'm looking for three different guns: Winter carry/HD
Summer carry IWB
Summer carry/pocket

Winter/HD - I have a Glock 23 and think I am set.

Summer IWB - leaning towards a Kahr. Help me decide between P9, k9,
k40, and TP9. The Glock is too thick for IWB summer carry
on my frame.

Summer pocket - looking at kahr pm9, p9covert, S&W 342 or 642.

Most of the time I will only carry the pocket pistol, as I am in a very low threat area. The IWB and Glock23 would be for carry in higher threat environments when I am out of town. I may also use the Glock as a car gun. Thanks in advance - Ian

Summer guns? Winter guns? Hmmmmmmmm........winter guns don't work well in summer due to their aggressive tread. Summer guns don't work well in winter because they lack anti-freeze.

I've got a better answer. I'll install a more coarsely checkered grip for winter and check the anti-freeze before the bad weather sets in. Otherwise, I'll continue to carry my Springfield Ultra Compact everyday and just hope it doesn't freeze up or skid on some icy road.

I just bought a S&W 642. Only 15ozs + ammo. :)

S&W 642 for a pocket gun. I just bought mine last week. I have had a 3913 S&W (9mm) for over 10 years and would highly recommend it. Glocks do not fit my hand so I will not comment on them. I bought a Kahr P40 and sold it after the first range trip, I have heard the pm9 was nice though.

I finally got it together enought to take a pic of the stuff I carry every day. This colt makes a great Summer gun. Note the small size. It's a .380.

My companion/backup/main carry weapon for all seasons & all clothes is my
Kel-Tec p11 in 9mm. It only acts as my main ccw in my office where it is impossible to carry IWB or OWB. It resides in my front pocket always.
It is impossiblw to detect, fast to draw when needed and weighs almost nothing so I forget its there most of the time.

You already have a Glock 23, so if you get yourself a S&W 642 (brand new for about $350 around here) I think you will find yourself very rounded out in terms of handguns you REALLY need. You may wish to throw in a Beretta .25acp 950BS or .32acp Kel-Tec P-32 (either can be had for under $250) just so's you really never have an excuse to go anywhere unarmed.

That said though - be good to yourself - go get all the others you want & can afford. But consider them "toy" purchaces.

Thanks for all the replies. The more I think about it, I will probably replace the glock with either the K9, P9 or TP9. I'll just have to get my hands on them and see which is the better fit. I've tried four holsters with the Glock and it prints too much for me. I am 6'2 and 175. I think one of the thinner Kahrs will be easier for me to conceal. Beyond that I will go with one of the Smiths and call it good. Although I like Nick's idea with the Kel-tec. Finally, I think I'll stick with my Mossy for HD as I have two small kids and don't want over penetration. Thanks again - Ian

Ian, I agree with your original choices. If you replace the Glock with a Kahr, you'll really be set with similar manual of arms, pointing, trigger, etc.

All the responses would work, however.

cheers

We should be helping come up with justifications for the purchase of more than one gun!!

Yes, yes, one gun can typically serve in all three roles but we should be assisting with the "But Honey . . . " conversations. :D

More guns = good!

Now to actually contribute to the conversation:

The S&W 342 is one of the finest multi-role guns out there. Very easy to slip into a pocket as long as the pants/shorts are not skin-tight (no Reno 911 shorts). Since you already have a Glock 23 and standard cap mags are available again, a Glock 27 would be an excellent choice. Carry it with the 9 round mag and a G23 mag as a reload. A lot of the guys I work with carry the G-26 with the 10 round, but have G-19 mags with an A&G adapter to insert if we are about to go through the door.

Depending upon how big you are and your standard mode of dress, the G-27 may be a little big for pocket carry.

5x5,

My recommendation is - if you want a Kahr, go get one. But don't sell the Glock to get it. If the Kahr works out for you and you find it really fits your needs, you can always sell the Glock later. I say this because I've let a few handguns go in the interest of economy to justify the purchace of new ones. One in particular I've always regretted trading was a Ruger Speed Six, .357Mag, 2.75" barrel. Not a particulary "sexy" gun - but a tough, smooth, reliable, accurate, reasonably concealable & powerful handgun.

In the grand scheme of things, firearms are kind of like video games. It's not the basic operating platform (the gun) that costs so much - it's the accessories (i.e. ammo, carry rigs & range time) that start to add up.

FWIW, I carry any combination of a Glock 23 and a S&W 642. There is no combination of carry options that these two firearms can't meet.

You already have an exellent ccw with the Glock. I wouldn't dream of selling my 23.

For pocket carry you can't beat the 642. Loaded with Speer 135 gr Gold Dot +p's it's makes a potent carry gun.

What kind of clothes do you wear in the summer that you can't ccw a Glock 26 or 27? With a good iwb holster you can make a 26/27 disappear under a loose shirt.

I'm considering just staying with the Glock. The Kahrs sound great, but I'm not going to sell the Glock and buy one until I can get my hands on them. None of my local shops stock them even though one is supposedly a Kahr dealer. Could you tell me what holsters you have found effective for the G23? I would like to find an OWB that rides high and tight.
Thanks, Ian

Ian-

Based upon what you have said, it seems a Kahr P9 Covert would be the way for you to go. The slide is the same length as a P9; the grip is the same height as a PM9.

With the flush-fitting mag, it is nearly as easy to conceal in a pocket as a PM9, I am told. Insert an extended mag, and you transform it into a P9 for those days you desire to go IWB. Kind of like two guns in one.

After you've carried it once, however, you'll probably wonder how you ever did without it.

Pocket for me as of now is Seecamp .32 LWS

IWB is Glock 26

Soon to come is a Rohrbaugh R9s in 9mm..:)

Sig 225 in Rosen ARG with Power Balls if I am wearing cloths to conceal.

The easiest most verstile weapon I carry almost all the time is S&W 442 in a Kramer pocket with some CorBon 124 +P .

In Florida it is difficult sometimes to conceal due the fact you never wear a jacket. Some people like those belly bands on there chest.

Good Luck.

I like the glock27/26 guns for concealed carry...although to me a 1911 commander size is nice also...including the para ordnance ccw model

I just recently sold my Glock 27 after I purchased a Kahr PM9. Nice pocket gun. I'm waiting until my new pocket holsters and extra 6 round mags arrive before placing it into daily service. I took it to the range this last weekend. 200 rounds without any failures at all. +P ammo, no problem. Light recoil and easy to carry an conceal.
I do also own an S&W 342 in .38 Special. Also a great carry gun. Not as comfortable to shoot as the Kahr, but still an excellent choice.
