Southerners are all upset they cant slaves. There were many more reasons for the Civil War than slaves. Book and even tv can tell you that. Saying that the South is upset that they cant enslave other people and ignoring all the other reasons why the South chose to leave the Union is very close minded and also an uninformed opinion.
Please leave it alone.
The thread has value as it was presented.
If it keeps getting pissed on it's gonna get buried

i must've hit home....

Randy,
and you're 25 huh? No way!! You 'sound' more like 15 or so, and have a lot more growing up to do yourself. No mature 25 year old hangs around with 17-year-olds anyway, except possibly for one who never grew up himself, or one looking for trouble. Which one are you?:neener:

Below is my attempt to bring this back on topic.

Shiloh
by Darryl Worley

A mist halos the meadow and a soft wind
Breathes a whisper through the trees
As I lean against a hickory I close my eyes and I can almost see
The ghostly forms of blue and gray
And I can almost hear the cannons blast
Standin' in the presence of the past

The first few waves came cheerin'
Fear and hatred runnin' through their blood
When the day was finally over
Those left were wadin' through a crimson flood
To think I could be right here
In the spot where some young soldier breathed his last
Standin' in the presence of the past

Brother fightin' brother
Father fightin' son
By the time the sun was settin'
Looked like the South had won
Now my mouth's as dry as cotton
And my heart is beatin' fast
Standin' in the presence of the past

Sunrise caught the rebels sleepin'
And they woke to hear a Yankee bugle blow
Bullets flew like angry hornets
Till the peach tree blossoms drifted down like snow
It must have been like hell on earth
What happened here is more than we can grasp
Standin' in the presence of the past

Brother fightin' brother
Father fightin' son
By the time the smoke had lifted
They knew the North had won
Lord my soul feels empty
As my tears fall on this grass
Standin' in the presence of the past

Brother killin' brother
Father slayin' son
From the looks of this old graveyard
Hell nobody really won
Somethin's changed inside me
It sure can happen fast
Standin' in the presence of the past

A mist halos the meadow and a soft wind
Breathes a whisper through the trees

Gettysburg National Military Park is looking for information related to the vandalism of civil war monuments on the Gettysburg Battlefield damaged during the night of February 15, 2006 or the early morning hours of February 16, 2006. Vandals pulled the top stone and sculpture off of the 11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Monument, dedicated on October 8, 1885. The 11 th Massachusetts monument is located on Emmitsburg Road at the intersection of Sickles Avenue. Vandals pulled down the bronze sculpture of a Zouave infantryman from the pedestal of the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Monument, dedicated on July 2, 1886, located at the Sherfy house on Emmitsburg Road. The figure landed on a decorative iron fence that was also damaged.

Vandals also pulled the bronze sculpture of a Civil War Artilleryman from the monument to Smith’s battery, also known as the 4 th New York battery, located on Devil’s Den. The Smith’s battery monument was dedicated July 2, 1888.

Something to take note of, Im sure the police already considered this. All the units memorials that where damaged where Union.

11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Monument,
114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Monument
4 th New York battery

Most monuments and memorials at Civil War battlefields are from Union units. The Confederate monuments are state monuments and are huge relative to the Union monuments. So logically more Union monuments are damaged than Southern monuments. AFAIK, there are no Confederate unit monuments at Gettysburg.

I did notice that but thought that it may just be a Union site.
I think you have to come down a little further for the Southern stuff

No doubt and I agree with you that this is shameful, but playing the freedom card here is just ludicrous. The South lost their freedom because of the Civil War.

Thats debateable and another topic completely. But regardless those men fought for freedom (Both Northern and Southern)

Well I'm just old fashioned enough to wish that if/when they find the culprits, they should receive a substantial quantity of strong whacks to their ***** with a heavy leather belt, regardless of their physical age. Apparently they are still juveniles mentally and should be punished as such. Also sounds like maybe their parents spared the rod and spoiled the child too much. Just my .02.

Good shooting and be safe.

Egregiously uninformed

"AFAIK, there are no Confederate unit monuments at Gettysburg."

You've obviously NEVER been there, or have even a remote familiarity with the park. The Virginia monument is the epicenter of line of stunning Confederate monuments on - SURPRISE! - Confederate Avenue, which runs between and roughly parallel to the Emmitsburg Road and Seminary Ridge. The South Carolina and Mississippi monuments are also noteworthy. Far more recent additions, particularly Florida's, pale by comparison. There are also markers for significant regiment positions and commanders, such as where Gen. Heth received his head wound the first day.

Don't forget the Confederate battery positions, including the Whitworth gun on Oak Hill.

While I'm here, note that I made no such comments as this person claims:

"Don't further disrespect the memories of the fallen with "we were right you were slave owners" comments."

I never said the North went to war to free the slaves. Nor would I.

Back to the subject: Make the little b*****s CLEAN each and every monument - with a toothbrush. It's the only way to get the verdigris and dirt out of all those little crevices.

AFTER they pay for the repairs.
