After reading some fo the threads on the various .33 pistols I finally picked up a new one. I have an old Ruger Standard model from the early 1960s (mail order even!). It is getting unreliable and parts are not easy to find for that early version. I was not considering a new Ruger as this one has sharp edges and the heel mag release.

Some of the posts here gave glowing reports on the Ruger Mk III 5.5 inch target. I was looking for a new Rem 870 and happended to spy several Rugers in the case; so I fondled a few. :) Wow, these were nice! I finally settled on the 5.5 inch stainless Target. Nice adjustable sights and very solid. Ruger has really smoothed out the machining and finish since 1960, and the inards seem much slicker as well. I can;t wait to get to the range and run a few boxes through it.

Then today I was at another gun shop looking for a hard shell rifle case and came across the Walther P22 for the first time. Those are cute pistols. I want one! Sounds like they work well for certain brands of ammo. The P22 appears to be of high quality steel and polymer and manufacture.

The point is, if you haven't handled some of the newer .22 pistols you really ought to get down and do so. They have improved tremendously and I am excited about .22 again. I imagine the Browning and others are equally nice. Time to get your self an updated .22. And if you are new to guns then you have the best choice of .22 ever (assuming S&W still makes their great .22 kit revolvers).

Yep, the S&W website still shows the J Frame 317, 22LR, 8 round cylinder, 3" bbl, hi-viz fiber optic front & adjustable rear sights. They have it in 2" fixed sights snubbie as well. While not kit guns, they're also still offering the K Frame 617 with partridge front & adjustable rear target sights; 10 round cylinder & 6" bbl, or the traditional 6 shooter in 4" or 6" bbl models. Throw those in with the nice new 22 autos that are available and there's a fine selection of 22 handguns right now.
