I visited Escanaba and Gladstone, MI last week. They are a few hours away and I don't get there as often as I'd like.
Gladstone is the home of Marble Arms, which has been making knives, camp axes and other sporting stuff for a long time, but there are two other knife makers in the area. Marble's has a retail outlet beside US-2 where I saw several nice bowie-type knives. They were well balanced and came with several different handles. I looked at the stag handled one first, but liked the leather washer handle better. Marble's big knives are on my list of bowies to consider. They had a lot of smaller camp and hunting knives too, but I was most interested in bowies.
In Rapid River, a few miles down US-2, Wolverine Knife Works had a lot of smaller hunting knives on display. They don't do a bowie yet, but the skinners and small game knives were neat designs. The ones I liked best had a piece of whitetail antler or bison horn at the top of the handle. Some were laser engraved. They also had a couple of folding knives.
Bark River Knife And Tool is somewhere around too, but I didn't get there. I did see some Bark River knives in one of the local gun emporiums. They looked neat too.
If you are seeking a hunting knife these companies are good places to look.
