So I just traded my Sig 238 for a Gen 4 Glock 17 in FDE. Im going to have the trigger guard undercut a little higher and have a full stipple job done. My question, I've personally never had a problem with the finger humps on the gen 3 and 4's but have never handled a Gen 1 or 2 so I dont know what it would feel like without them. Is it actually worth having it done (only $30 extra) or should I just leave the humps and hope my fingers dont get any fatter :D

Why not shoot it a bit before modding it?
Then you would know if the finger grooves bother you.

Skateboard tape, Decal grips, Talon grips, etc are superior to most stippling jobs, aren't permanent and don't detract from the value of the gun.

If you are really concerned about "grippiness"......find an RTF2 Glock. The Rough Texture Finish 2 was considered by many to be too aggressive and discontinued from normal production. It can still be ordered on department orders or for distributor specials (like the Larry Vickers edition). Used Gen3's with RTF can be found, but often command a premium.

Well I've got multiple glocks so not so much worried about resale value, and I have had a few g17's before so I know the finger grooves are fine with me, I've just never had one without them so I dont know if I would like it more. I was just going to use this G17 as an over the top project gun anyways.

I've got a couple G2's and have thought of shortening one grip down to fit G19 mags.
Something to think about.
Having both G2 & G3 models in different calibers I'd say I lean toward favoring the original grip but on my G19 I do have one of those rubber Gripper add ons but I think the finger groove spacing is different than the G3/G4's.
One things for sure, you take them off and they're gone, might want to keep the FDE and buy a good used G2, The 17's are still around and I've seen them down around $300.

RTF2 definitely the best thing they ever produced.

I also have a Gen4 that is undercut, stippled w/finger bumps removed. I still dont like it as much as the RTF2

The grip reduction modification in my opinion has the potential to be problematic in regards to resale if the pistol is not a keeper. I've noticed on certain auction sites that individuals selling such modified pistols can't get the added value for the modification made.

I think whatever money people put into a gun is almost exactly how much they lose in value...

There are many exceptions, but, thats kind of how I do the rough math...

They think they are special or something... you see classifieds asking for asinine amounts for their "customized" (and I use that term loosely) pistol.

I have a Gen3 Glock 17 and I think undercutting the trigger guard makes a lot to sense to avoid the "G" callous on the inside middle finger of my shooting hand. I'd be interested to see what that would look like.

I'm not a big fan of most of the other permanent Glock grip mods. The frontstrap finger grooves on the Gen3 17 are not a problem with my big hands. If this were a G-19 or G-23, I think a Gen2 grip makeover to remove the finger grooves would make a lot of sense but for me at least it's NBD on the full size guns.

If you're currently fine with the finger grooves, why would you even consider wasting money to remove them, especially since you point out that you haven't yet felt one without them. I got a deal on a used G19 a couple years ago, that had them removed, and I was surprised to find that I liked my stock G19 better.
If your fingers DO somehow get fatter someday, you can still easily do it then.
And,even though you think you won't want to sell or trade this later, there's simply no possible way to be sure of this, and from what I've seen on my local gun classified sites, guys that have goobered-up their Glocks with stippling and other mods, do seem to have a harder time moving them.
It's just a 9mm, how good of a grip do you really need? It ain't like you're gonna be jello-wrestling with it ( right? :neener: )

Yeah, I've seen a few of these Glocks with the "whittled" grips and I have to chuckle, I saw a feature in Combat Handguns that shows you how to stipple the grip on your polymer framed gun with a soldering iron, I slapped my forehead when I read this! So we might start seeing more of these "mods" in the used gun cases!

A gun show weekend is not complete until someone walks up to my table and offers a "custom" Siglockchester for trade on one of my NIB guns.

"But, but, but........Potsy Weber of Secret SquirrelTactical Armory did a trigger job, action job, polish, wax, buff, fluff and installed custom magazine floorplates!!!! It has a stipple job in Tactical Phillips Head and it cost me $600!!!".

LOL

just curious, what do you offer? (knowing you need your profit) or do you not even want to be bothered by it?

That's funny! I'm cursed with big hands so I never had the urge to carve up a grip to make it smaller. Even my Gen4 21 has the large backstrap on it, which works for me! And I'll tell you, the next unmolested Gen2 19 I come across is coming home with me!

I just say thanks but not interested. Some will persist about what a great deal it is.
Glocks with stipple jobs are nearly worthless except for parts.

Oh I believe it.... TXGunTrader is full of these awesome Gocks and their insane asking prices..

Hilarious lol

I agree. They are the only Glocks I have I didnt stipple. I wish they had kept it, or at least offered it as an option to us lowly civilians.

All depends on the job and the buyer. Even if it was "ugly", as long as it wasnt done over the top, and they didnt mess with the insides, Id pick it up and just redo it. Easy enough to do.

What I dont want, are the guns with all the aftermarket parts in them. I like them factory stock in that respect. Night sights are the only thing I might add, if they dont come with them.

As I said earlier, I stipple all but the RTF2's. Its easy to do, and very functional. I could care less if someone doesnt like it, I did it for me, not them. So far though, anyone who has shot one of mine (well, except for a couple of people with extreme "non working" hands) has liked the feel and how the gun locks into your hands.

I never felt the need for stippling the Gen4's. My gen3, maybe.

Try shooting a Dan Wesson Valor for a 3000 round 3 day course. That 1911 is grippy as heck, but just like a stippled Glock, your skin can be a little sore by the end of day two. Which is why my Gen3 is still unstippled.

My hands are heavily calloused and rough from work, so I need that texture. Other than the RTF2's, the factory Glock textures leave a lot to be desired, and any dampness in my hands really exaggerates things.

The plus side to the stippling is, it works as an exfoliant. :)
