I'm looking for a pistol in 9mm to use for a training gun. I'm looking at 2, a Glock 17 and the new Smith M&P. Has anyone had the chance to compare the two? Please don't turn this into a smorgusboard of recomendations. I have several pistols of different makes including a BHP in 9mm. I'm looking for a hardy good shooting DA only weapon just for training.
Thanks
Jim

The new S&W M&P semi autos are getting good reviews in the gun press. However, the Glock is a proven and tested design. Add to that the fact that used & police trade-in Glocks are readily available at a good savings over new and even more savings with night sights. Additionally there are plenty of magazines available and a huge aftermarket for Glock accesories. Put it all together and I think the Glock is the better buy. Try Kentucky Imports, www.kyimports.com or CDNN investments for police trade-in Glocks. To get gun pricing from CDNN you'll need to go to their website, www.cdnninvestments.com and download their catalog in PDF Format. For some reason they won't list gun prices online, but you can get them by downloading the catalog - go figure.

And, I still haven't found a distributer who has any 9mm M&P pistols in stock and ready to ship.
Actually I don't believe S&W has actually produced any 9mm caliber M&P pistols yet.

If you compare the Model 22 .40 caliber Glock to the .40 caliber M&P all I can comment about is the M&P doesn't have a track record of blowing up like the .40 Glock.
Give it time and it might.:)

G17!

I have shot the Smith MP a couple times and it didn't seem to really "stick out" or impress me a lot. On the other hand, espically for target go - with the Glock, and the 17 happens to be a great choice. I have one and it is very accurate and after close to 5,000 rounds through it, not one misfire. As a test I will admit that it was rarely cleaned. I also shot it in the rain and snow while my friends either wouldn't shot or the gun couldn't, and once again no problems. Plus if you ever decide to later - there many cool custom parts form them to enhance performance. Hope it helps! -Smokes-

Thanks Smokes I have had a 27 for years and have had zero issues with it. I have my 1911's, and BHP's, Sigs, etc. I don't see the big deal about the glocks. When I first purchased my 27 I tok it up home and had my brother shot it who is a Major in the airforce. First comment was never trust a weapon you can see through! He shot it some poorly, then handed it to me. He was amazed how well it could be shot. I'm looking forward to the 17.

I don't care for either one, but I do have to say that after handling the M&P, it's quite comfortable in the hand - much more so than any Glock. That silly magazine disconnect needs to go though.

And let me say one word when it comes to SW autos: Sigma. It took SW years to make it right.

Sigmas are not indicative of the quality of ALL the other S&W autoloaders. If you think they are you've abviously never handled any.

Glock 34

get the 34, only an inch more barrel and mine has shot 6,300 plus rounds. No problems. It is easy to shoot well.

Go with a Glock 17...

for the following reasons:
  • It is a proven design
  • The trigger pull/weight is more similar to your 1911 & BHP's than the M&P
  • It is a 'classic' , albeit a modern one, in its own right

FWIW and respectfully submitted

I've owned Glocks dating back to the late '80's including a G17. They were all reliable weapons and I never had any problems with them.
However, my next purchase is going to be a S&W M&P in 9mm. They won't be available until at least May, from what I'm told, but I don't mind waiting. The M&P feels so much better in my hand than a Glock - there is just no comparison. I'm told that felt recoil is even less than any other polymer pistol and the trigger is the best as well. In terms of quality and reliability, I think the M&P will be equal to the Glock. I think S&W got it right this time.
The local police department here put the M&P 9mm through a grueling test and it came through with flying colors. They have 1,500 of them on order to replace all of their service weapons.

If you are getting the pistol specifically for training, I think there are some good reasons to go with the G17. It is a proven high volume pistol. Gear is plentiful, available, and cheap. Trainers will know how to run/fix/diagnose issues with it. There is a reason Glocks have significant representation at many training classes.

The M&P might be a great weapon (it sure sounds like it is) - but a good strategy for maximizing training dollars is to choose proven gear.

Define "training gun."

I don't like the Glock for training people. I like a pistol with an exposed hammer. You can see at a glance the "condition of readiness."

If you must Glock I like the Model 19. Smaller, lighter just as effective.

Who listened to the complaints when some acquaintances converted from S&W 659s to Glock 17s. (Hint: Get a REAL bulletproof clearance barrel, they used one of those cast concreate trash barrel holders with lots of sand and a 1/4" steel lid and baffells. :what:

Jeff -

Neither the Glock nor the M&P has an exposed hammer. JMusic specifically restricted his question to those two pistols.
