I've been reading a lot of posts, but never posted.

I just got a new Glock 19 Gen 3 just barely a week ago. This gun is brand new and has 240 rounds through it. After cleaning my glock, I noticed that there was a chip on my barrel (a step right above where the spring locks). I ran my nail across it and I am quite certain it is a chip. You can see it from the attached pic.

Since I'm such a newb in this field, I was wondering if it is normal wear and tear, or should I be concerned where the chip originated from? It looks pretty much like a paint chip...but...I'd rather obtain advice from people that are much more experienced in this matter...

Any recommendations or answers are welcome. Thanks all!

On the one hand it doesn't look bad, but on the other it's a NEW gun. I'd say back to Glock with it. Let them deal with it in warranty. Especially since there are a whole host of metallurgy problems that can't be seen with the naked eye.

Good luck with it.

as a die hard glockhead. yes send it back.
they will do right.

there should be no chips, nothing. it is perfection, and also, its a gun.
as a glockhead, send it back. not safe. i wont shoot it......

they will make it right.

btw, glock is the bomb. you just got the one wrong one out of a million...heck, can i buy it lol...just to say i have the glock that is not so good lol.kidding.
yes, send it back.

dang lol...see its a glock. im like pwning the thread.

yes, for sure send it back. whether Glock or not, that IS a chip. your barrel looks much like mine, btw lol....well, minus the chip.
yes, send it back for sure. glocks reliability comes from silly stuff, like NO chips.
itll get no farther than smryna. and youll be fine. glock is not a nice company as to....all others. but they do, and will fix their products.
once again, i say, when they say perfection, they mean it.

Ghost

Tennifer is a nitro-carburizing process. In the US its known at melonite or QPQ.

The frame is 30% glass reinforced Nylon 6/6...Dupont Zytel ST801 would be a good starting point.

Oh, and chill out man...

Looks like a finish blemish shen you zoom in close and not a chip in the metal. Shouldn't be there but it won't have any effect on the functionality of the pistol or its useful life.

Looking at glocktalk.com and here, I am starting to get concerned in general with Glock Quality Control on the the later models in the last year. Send it back they will hook u up.

Glock barrels.

I understand that my comment is not really germane to this issue...I agree with the folks who have said, "send it back". That is the right thing to do. Having said that I will say that when you get it back invest in a Lone Wolf, KKM or other quality barrel for your Glock. I have one shelf of Glocks and I shoot them all and like them, but the barrel is one of the first things I replace. I use Lone Wolf exclusively.

it looks more like simple wear from shooting, if it isn't a measureable chip, with a micrometer etc. They probably would do nothing and call it normal wear and then your out the price of shipping the gun both ways to them.

If there are any sharp edges, at that point just take a piece of 320 grit wet dry sand paper and dull any sharp edges.

I once had a sw 52 target pistol that was very accurate and every time I shot it there would be metal chips all over the inside of the pistol.

It was caused by the sharp edges of the slide and barrell edges contacting each other, I basically took a small wet stone and chamfered any sharp corners, this eliminated and more metal chips and the gun was just as accuate as usual.

See what they want you to do. They might only want the slide assembly half of the gun.

But I doubt you'll get that barrel back even if they claim it's fine, you'll get a new one.

I'm not with the "Oh the metallurgy!!!" crowd at all.

I would shoot it some more.

If the "chip" gets bigger, you can still send it back.

If the chip doesn't get bigger - and it probably won't - I would just keep shooting it.

Some klutz in the assembly line probably dropped it on something hard after the finish was applied.

Yes Virginia, it IS possible to scratch a Glock barrel.

if it was mine i would keep an eye on it, and send it back if it became a bigger issue. however if you do decide to send it back, glock will take care of you. The biggest issue i see with this is not the fact that it got chipped, but what exactly caused it to happen.
