OK, here's the deal. I just bought my first semi-auto handgun today. It's a Glock 23 in 40 SW. As I know almost nothing about handguns, I shopped around and took the advice from the guys behind the counter. I thought I dun good.

It's been many many years since I bought a box of factory ammo. I had every intention of handloading for this pistol as well. Now, I am reading that handloading for this Glock is not such a good idea. Maybe even a very bad idea.

Can you guys enlighten me as to why handloading for the Glock is not recommended? I have read that the "Unsupported Chamber" of the Glock can be a problem. Hell, I don't even know what "unsupported chamber" means!

Thanks

I handloaded for my G23 with absolutly no problems. Load FMJ, and stay in the published data spectrum, and you'll do fine. Unsupported chambers are were the feedramp cuts into the chamber wall, and leaves a small area where the brass can blow out. Glock also runs a loose chamber, to add reliability. Newer Glocks have a tighter chamber, and the feedramp cut out is not so drastic. I picked up some brass from the local Police range,(Older G22s) and the brass was notably "bellied out" compared to the empties produced from my newer G23. I loaded those cases with no issues.

My Glock 40 loved a start load of Power Pistol, and cheap Win 165gr TC bullets. Good luck, and load safe!:)

you will be fine reloading for the glock, use fmj ammo and or plated bullets, loaded to below 1200fps (with plated bullets) and you will be good to go.

glock suggest that you don't shoot lead through there barrels, as thier barrels are of the poloygonal rifled design which is different from the conventional riflings on most handguns. It causes more lead fouling when using lead ammo.

Possum hit the nail on the head, stay away from lead bullets and you'll be fine and by the way, you DID DO GOOD.

I bought Storm Lake cut rifling barrels for my Glock 19 and Glock 23. I don't shoot anything but reloads if I can help it, and don't load anything besides lead bullets for handguns if I can help it.

Its interesting to note that Glock use a fully supported chamber in the high pressure 357 Sig.

JDGray brings up some interesting points on the newer Glocks I to have noticed. "Newer Glocks have a tighter chamber, and the feedramp cut out is not so drastic. I picked up some brass from the local Police range,(Older G22s) and the brass was notably "bellied out" compared to the empties produced from my newer G23."
