Those of you who have experience with both the G30 and the XD45 Compact: I would appreciate your thoughts.

I have a G30 which I like very much, in spite of the bulky grip. It's a great gun for sure, proven reliability & durability, accurate, nice trigger (with 3.5# connector & smooth-faced trigger shoe), but I just don't quite "love" the fit in the hand.

I recently handled an XD45 Compact which felt really good in my hand. Comes with both 10-round and 13-round mags. Great! THe XD45 Compact is about 1/2" longer than the G30, about 1/4" taller, and weighs about 5 ounces more than the G30. Fairly close in size and weight to the G30, close enough for me to be comparable choices for CCW. So they both are suitable for CCW, except that the XD45 has a more contoured, shaped grip than the G30 has.

I'm considering getting the XD45 Compact and wanted to hear other's thoughts on the comparison between the G30 and the XD45 Compact. I already know that the G30 has a lower bore-axis (wondering how much of a difference that really makes in application.) I know that the XD45 has a 4" barrel compared to the 3.8" barrel on the G30 (I like the longer barrel to keep velocity decent). And I know that Glock parts & accessories and after-market support is vast compared to XD (but I may not feel much, if any, need to modify the XD45 Compact.). So that may not be a significant aspect. I know that both are excellent, proven guns, overall, so this need not be a bash-Glock or bash-XD thread, just a calm, objective discussion would be perfect.

Perhaps, with the previously mentioned elements in mind, is just comes down to which one feels better in the hand and shoots more comfortably and there is no need for this discussion at all.... I don't really know for sure. I only own the G30 at this point, so opinions from XD45 Compact owners would be useful. What haven't I thought of and what are your thoughts about the two guns? Thanks very much, in advance.

I've been pondering this same decision myself. I did own the full-sized SA-XD45ACP and loved it. "Someone" begged me and begged me to the point I finally traded it. Stupid decision. Live and learn. Just this past week, I made my decision between a new full-sized XD or the Glock 21-SF. I went with the Glock. As such, and for me only, that means I'll now get the G30, versus the XD compact.

However, if you like the XD compact, get it. SA-XDs are tremendous. For me, one single factor tipped the scale to the Glock (and you you hit it) the bore height. Otherwise I would have purchased a new full-sized XD .45 ACP and compact XD .45 ACP. Who knows...I still might.

I'd say shoot one and that'll make your decision for you. I"ve got an XD Service and an XD Compact and the only thing I'd change is that I'd make the service a tactical if I could do it again. I really like my 45 compact and as you said it fits my hand MUCH better than a G30. I have no problem with shot-shot recovery but I'd imagine that's different for different people.

FWIW.

Have a good one,
Dave

I'd wait for the Glock 30SF. Yes, it's coming and has appeared on the inventory lists of some firearms distributors.

I just thought I would add my opinion, I don't however have any experience with the G30, but I do own the XD45c. I personally think the XD45compact is an excellent choice in that it conceals nearly as well as any sub compact but shoots like a full size. I personally find it easier to conceal than my Taurus Mil Pro, but much better to shoot even with the 10+1 mag. Glocks are great, but it depends on how you like the grip. I also love the safety features of the XD but that is just my opinion. Anyway good luck whatever you choose, and be safe!

Glock slide is much easier to rack. My wife has no issue with the glock, but can't rack the XD slide. XD high bore makes it ackward. Like holding a mallet. Very top heavy and unbalanced in my opinion. Glock has far better trigger reset. Very hard to short stoke a Glock trigger. Can't say the about the XD. Grip on the XD does feel nice though.

Go a gun shop that has rentals, and try one out. What may feel good in the hand doesn't always shoot well in the hand.

Thanks for the comments... this is a really difficult call!

Last night I undertook a little surgery on my G30... undercutting the rear of the trigger guard a little to make some more room for my middle finger knuckle. I've done this now on all of my Glocks... makes the grip a little more comfortable in that region.

With the 3.5# connector and smooth-faced trigger shoe I installed, I really like the trigger on my G30 and this gun is verrrry accurate! Stone reliable too. Obviously, there is a lot to like about the G30! But I am still drawn to the XD45 Compact for the more comfortable grip it has.

I'm thinking I am just going to have to buy the XD45 Compact and keep my G30 as well. Not a bad situation. Two great guns! As to which will win me over for carry duty... not sure. I carry IWB at about 4:30 o'clock with a heavy gun belt but without a holster... unorthodox method of carry for sure, and I have to be especially mindful of not touching that trigger... but it works well for me. Perhaps the XD45 will be more comfortable tucked inside the belt than the G30 is... we'll see.

Wait till the G30SF appears.. The current G30 is smaller and lighter, probably more reliable and you already own it.. The differense in barrel length is too small to show any ballistic advantage for the XD.. You already own the better gun.. Why waste money on the XD? The G30SF should make an apperance in Feb., 2008.
