I picked up a slightly used G36 as a IWB carry gun. This is my first carry weapon - I've had my certification for a while, just hadn't decided on something to carry. Anyhoo, shoots great, points good for me and I'm surprised at how accurate it is. I don't see any threads or posts that talk about the G36. Is it not a very common carry gun?

Also, the guy I got it from gave me the two holsters he had bought, a kydex paddle and a leather, both IWB. I think I prefer IWB with the kydex and feel pretty comfortable. as its designed to sit in the 5 o'clock. The leather is designed to sit in the 10 or 11 o'clock.

Having said that, I am looking for a shoulder holster for situations (driving, out with a light jacket that isn't 3/4 length etc) when the IWB isn't that comfortable or concealablity is difficult. With the number of shoulder holsters out there, I think I've settled on the Galco Miami Classic. I hesitate for two reasons:

1. wondering how comfortable it will be to wear. I think I want it to ride pretty high up into my armpit to allow for more concealabilty, but I'm thinking it may be uncomfortable sandwiched between my inner arm and my rib cage. I'm a big but fairly athletic guy at 6'2" 260lbs, so I am wondering if I'm asking for trouble. With the cost of the holster, I don't want to own a $130 leather rib irritant that I won't want to wear. Also, will the leather bleed onto clothing if it gets warm/sweaty. Unfortunately there isn't anywhere that will allow you to test drive the holster for a weekend/week to see if you like it.

2. is there another holster I should be looking at. Leather seems like the right choice, but would nylon be better. Should I buy a less expensive nylon holster and if I like the feel move up to the leather (thus owning 2, ugh!). I'd rather not shell out for a complete custom job, especially since I'm not sure if I'll be happy with this type of carry. When I checked out the Miami Classic, the pistol was really, really, really tight in the holster, is that normal? The sales guy told me that if I left the gun in overnight, it would loosen up:what: - I'm thinking more like 2 weeks rubbed down with oil twice a day and then maybe.

I respect the people who visit this site and I'm hoping to draw off of your collective experience. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance for helping a relative CCW newbie.

I was just talking to a guy the other day who was carrying a Walther P99 in a miami rig under a suit coat. Looked good. The only thing I could see was when sitting behind him I could see the criss-crossed straps through the jacket, barely.

As for tight leather, there's a few methods to loosen it up. The consensus seems to be do NOT wet or oil the leather. Let it wear-in more naturally to keep it stiff. It takes time, but will give you a better result. One method, sit down to watch your favorite TV show with the holster in one hand and your UNLOADED pistol in the other. Just spend the show inserting and removing the pistol. Or, wrap the pistol in a layer or two of plastic wrap and put it in the holster overnight.

Quality leather should not "bleed" or stain your clothes. So don't worry about that. And one way or another, eventually you'll end up spending over $130 on holsters anyway. For one pistol I think I'm up to four or five holsters, and there's others I have my to-buy list.;) (and that makes me a light-weight by THR standards, ask about "Drawers full of holsters")

loaner holsters

There is another site called glock talk that will loan you different holsters to try out before you buy one. They have a lot of glock info you might want to check it out. I have a G36 I carry it in a fist kydex hybrid. The kydex is so much faster on the draw than leather. The hybrid is leather on the outside and kydex on the inside very thin and comfortable and priced right.
